Powder Puff players plan to battle it out on field

Organizers warn not to be fooled by the name Powder Puff. The women's teams competing in Saturday's football tournament at the west field across from Ball Memorial Hospital are hard-core and out for blood, they said.

"We're really competitive," said team captain Jamie Bose, of Kappa Alpha Theta. "Last year I broke both of my hands, and our quarterback broke a few ribs."

Regardless of their injures, they kept playing. Kappa Alpha Theta was bent on defending its title as reigning champions. Alpha Omicron Pi, however, dethroned the Powder Puff Queens with a 7-0 win.

Kappa Alpha Theta warns all teams they are out to win back the title.

"We really want to reclaim the title," Bose said. "We're going to win."

Kappa Alpha Theta may be facing some tough competition, from Sigma Kappa, whose members are also convinced they will win. Team Captain Kristen Bishop said they have a lot of practice time under their belts and they're not intimidated by the other teams.

"The women are really rough," Bishop said. "We're ready to bring home a trophy this year."

Both team captains said this was one of the best greek events of the year.

"You're competing against people you know, so it's a lot of fun," Bishop said. "It's my favorite event. This is the best one."

"We had a lot of fun last year," Bose said, despite rough injures.

Powder Puff chair Brent Reece said the women are getting fired up, and that the tournament is very competitive.

The event will be held at West Field, at the corner of Tillotson and University avenues, west of the Quad. Admission to the games is $5, and a d.j. will music in between games.

If the women are playing football, what would be more fitting than men practicing cheers, and cheering on the players and the crowd?

"You'll see a bunch of frat guys dressed real crazy," Reece said. "We're trying to gear it toward the audience."

Reece said almost all proceeds go to A Better Way and The Young Survival Coalition.
