Group making plans for next year

President Michelle Hudson wants to make group more appealing.

Black Student Association wants to make the organization more enjoyable for incoming freshmen and students in the fall.

And they dedicated their last meeting of the semester Tuesday to realizing that goal.

BSA president Michelle Hudson said she wants to make the organization more appealing.

"We want to make BSA new and exciting and something different than the past that will make people eager about attending meetings and being involved," she said.

Vice president Russell Hale said he wished to bring BSA back to the center of the black community and provide incentives for members.

"We want it where BSA members want to be involved and receive benefits and recognition for their involvement," Hale said.

Students said more panel discussions about local and national events would help. They also said BSA should provide more social activities, academic recognition, fund-raisers and youth activities.

According to Hudson, the executive board will select the most feasible ideas.

"Some were already ideas that we thought up on our own," Hudson said.

Junior Jamie Melton said better communication could help BSA and other minority organizations plan events more efficiently.

"It would cut down on spending and get more support," Melton said. "BSA should be the core of all the organizations."

Graduate student Monwell Benson said more greek involvement would bring more interest from the students. She also said greeks and BSA should do more community and social activities together, such as a unity stepshow, a type of dance popular among black college students.

"If they see us stepping together, they'll see the unity and want to work with us and support the things that we do, because we are the first thing they (incoming freshmen) see upon entering college," he said.

Secretary Marvin Eans said in order to see change, the current members and executive board must take the initiative.

"Our first impression is our best impression," he said. "We have to take it upon ourselves to maintain a good reputation in order to keep members active and involved."
