Cardinals looking to improve marks

Last week's second place showing at the Miami Invite was best of season.

The women's track team took its lumps in the first two weeks of the outdoor season. Top-notch competition at the Purdue Open and the Duke Invitational in the first two weeks of the season left the Cardinals with some questions.

Now, head coach Sue Parks says her squad is ready to dish out some lumps of its own.

Last weekend, the Cardinals had their best showing of the season when they placed second of nine teams at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational. This weekend, they will travel to Indianapolis to a weaker field and a nicer facility.

"It's not going to be the level of competition the last two weekends have been," Parks said. "It'll be a good meet in a good facility."

The meet is hosted by Butler University, but will be run at the Michael A. Carroll Track Stadium, the facility of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

The women's team was originally going to split the squad and run part of the team at the Mt. SAC Invitational in Walnut, Ca. This meet had been a staple on the Ball State schedule for the last few years, but Parks decided not to take the team this season.

"It was on the schedule, but we decided early on in the season not to go," Parks said.

She is happy for this opportunity to run at Butler though. Parks said the weaker competition will give them a chance to try new things.

"It'll give us the opportunity to do different things with different people," she said. "Most of the distance runners are going to run down to give them a little break, but nothing major."

The conditions should be in the athletes' favor, as the temperatures are expected to drop to a more comfortable level.

"We're not complaining, but it has been hard with the weather shift - going from cold to hot so quick," Parks said. "It is easier to get things done, but it has moved to an extreme. This weekend we should fare very well and just improve our marks."
