Temporal front: Excessive benefits unfair to heroes

September 11 was a tragedy beyond the imaginations of many, and a horrendous event in our nation's history.

With that said, there is a great injustice being done in this nation to the people. Our tax dollars are being used to compensate the families of those killed in the attacks, and the excess is unbelievable. There are good reasons for such compensation, but the injustice being done and the greed of those receiving these funds makes the entire process a joke.

The victim compensation fund provides a necessary device in the post-attack economy. By receiving money from the government, the victims agree not to sue the airlines. By leveling lawsuits at the airline industry, it could cause the economy to come to a standstill and threaten the overall stability of its fragile state even farther. But at what point does the awarding of money become ridiculous and without merit?

Many of those who died on September 11 were wealthy. They had good jobs, had families, lived the good life and most importantly had the wisdom to purchase life insurance. However, because they made six figures does not entitle them to anything.

Entitlement has become a real problem in this country; people believe that for some reason they deserve something. Many believe that the government has a duty to step in and save them from themselves. American citizens deserve nothing but the right to live free and prosper as their talents permit. Seventy years of liberal programs have fooled people into believing that the government is the savior of men, and their ever present hero.

It was once the case that a person knew the only thing they could count on was their own strength, drive and tenacity to triumph over adversity. Such is no longer the case as many line up for a federal program as soon as they hit a bump in life.

This applies to the victims of September 11 in a simple and obvious way. Americans donated $ 2 billion to relief efforts in New York and Washington. When they were called, the average citizen donated what they could to lend a helping hand to those in need. Unfortunately, when it comes to the victims, all they can scream is that they want more money. They want federal money on top of pensions, life insurance and charity payments they will receive.

When you compare this to the benefits received by military soldiers and their families it could literally make you ill. The immediate cash payment for those who put their life on the line for our protection is $6000. The victims of September 11 are going to receive an average of $1.65 million and they aren't happy. What kind of justice is that?

Liberals have achieved one of their primary goals. They have altered the mindset of the American culture so that many people no longer do the right thing. Their programs have resulted in unfettered greed and dependency on the government, with this level of success their next goal will be straight socialism. Liberals believe the citizens are stupid, and many people are proving them right.

Entitlement programs and greed have created a mentality in this country that getting money from someone else will solve your problems. People used to believe that the only way to get ahead was hard work, but apparently with September 11 as with so many other things, the best way to get ahead is to rely on the work of someone else. Despite the propaganda, the best way to get ahead is still to do the right thing.
