Editorial: Sept. 11 terminology degrades events

Phrases include calling a person a "Taliban," and "That's so Sept. 10."

There's a fine line between clever wit and stupid remarks, and apparently, some Americans have crossed it.

It seems people have started adopting Sept. 11 terminology into their everyday lives. A messy room is"ground zero." A mean teacher is "such a terrorist." A weird person is a "Taliban." A petty concern? "That's so Sept. 10."

Sadly enough, in only six months, one of the most tragic days in America's history has been fully implemented into pop culture.

Though no one should take inane slang too seriously, this babble mocks those who lost their lives in the attack and those who sacrificed their lives helping others.

People have defended the use of such slang as a coping device.

"They are trying to joke around, which takes air out of it and shows how ridiculous it all is," said Alan Lipman, the executive director of the Center at Georgetown for the Study of Violence.

The words are not, however, a way to cope. They are shallow remarks that should soon be forgotten. It would be a shame if an immature few were to trivialize those events we should never forget.
