Chamber Choir hosts benefit concert to support A Better Way

Musical group has recently performed in Paris, Venice.

The Ball State University Chamber Choir will perform a benefit concert for A Better Way, a shelter that helps battered women and children.

"After the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks we decided as a group we should do something to help our community," said Bobbi Jo Carroll, Chamber Choir vice president. "I hope a lot of people come because (some) don't really know how important a place like (A Better Way) can be."

Preparation started about two weeks ago when director Doug Amman set up the show through family services of Muncie. While they are a classically based group, gospel and jazz pieces will also be performed.

The concert is scheduled to last about an hour and the choir will use material from its May tour and from last semester.

The choir consists of 39 vocalists and Amman. Last year the Chamber Choir performed in St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice, Italy, and in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris as part of a European tour. In the last 15 years the Chamber Choir has performed in 36 states and two provinces of Canada during annual tours.

This year they will tour, the Midwest and for next year a trip to Hawaii is planned.

The choir will visit Fort Wayne-area schools March 24-25 to promote themselves and show high school groups what Ball State has to offer.

"It's kind of a recruitment thing," Carroll said. "It gets our name out there and kids see what's available."

The Muncie Center for the Arts, 520 E. Main St., will host the show tonight at 7. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and free to anyone under high school age. Tickets are only available at the door.

"I think the show is a good idea," Carroll said. "We've never done anything like this. People should come to take advantage of the concert and help out other people."
