Cards seek to end road losing streak

Ball State heads into tonight's meet with an overall record of 11-8.

The Ball State gymnastics team travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo., today to try to get back on a winning track. The Cardinals will be facing host Southeast Missouri and Illinois State.

The squad will be trying to turn around a road losing streak that includes losses at Kentucky, Missouri, and a third-place finish in last Saturday's Spartan Invitational at Michigan State.

The team will go into today's meet ranked ahead of the competition. The Cardinals are 29th in the latest GymInfo National Poll, which determines NCAA national rankings. Southeast Missouri ranks 51st and Illinois State ranks 42nd.

Southeast Missouri improved its record to 5-8 with a win over Texas Woman's University last Saturday. Illinois State is 6-3 after falling to Illinois-Chicago two weeks ago.

The Cardinals have already faced Illinois State this season. At a four-team meet Feb. 3 in DeKalb, Ill., the cards scored a 192.525 to overcome the Redbirds' 192.4.

Ball State will try to ride some good performances from last weekend's Spartan Invitational into today's meet. Senior Jenny Gantt earned a score of 9.9 on floor to tie for first. Teammate Courtney Vojtasek turned in a career-high 9.8 to tie for third on beam.

The Cardinals bring an 11-8 overall record to today's meet. They are 3-2 in the Mid-American Conference. They currently own the second-highest mark among MAC schools on beam, 48.825, which they achieved two weeks ago at Kentucky.
