BREAKING: McLeod beats Smith by six votes for 2002 MAC Player of the Year

Bowling Green senior Keith McLeod and Kent State head coach Stan Heath were named Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year and Coach of the Year Wednesday by the MAC News Media Association.

McLeod leads the MAC in scoring, with an average of 22.3 points per game -- the highest PPG average since Miami's Wally Szczerbiak led the league with 24.2 PPG in 1999.

Heath, in his first year coaching Kent State, has led the Golden Flashes to 17 conference wins -- the highest total in MAC history.

McLeod earned six more votes than Ball State junior Theron Smith, who finished second in the voting. Other players receiving votes were Northern Illinois' Leon Rodgers (7), Kent State's Trevor Huffman (3), Andrew Mitchell (1) and Antonio Gates (1) and Ohio's Brandon Hunter (1).

Heath monopolized Coach of the Year voting, earning 43 out of a possible 66 votes. Other coaches with votes include Western Michigan's Robert McCullum (10), Miami's Charlie Coles (4), Northern Illinois' Rob Judson (4), Ball State's Tim Buckley (3) and Buffalo's Reggie Witherspoon (3). +â-ä-í2-¿
