Awards announced

Theron Smith and Petie Jackson were both recognized by the Mid-American Conference Wednesday as Smith was named to the five-member All-MAC first team and Jackson was given accolades on the second team.

Smith was named to the second team last season as a sophomore and was MAC Freshman of the Year in 1999-2000.

Also awarded MAC honors Wednesday was Bowling Green senior Keith McLeod and Kent State head coach Stan Heath were named MAC Men's Basketball Player of the Year and Coach of the Year Wednesday by the MAC News Media Association.

McLeod leads the MAC in scoring, with an average of 22.3 points per game - the highest average since Miami's Wally Szczerbiak led the league with 24.2 PPG in 1999.

Heath, in his first year coaching Kent State, has led the Golden Flashes to 17 conference wins - the highest total in MAC history.

McLeod earned six more votes than Smith, who finished second in the voting.

Heath monopolized Coach of the Year voting, earning 43 out of a possible 66 votes. Other coaches with votes include Western Michigan's Robert McCullum (10), Miami's Charlie Coles (4), Northern Illinois' Rob Judson (4), Ball State's Tim Buckley (3) and Buffalo's Reggie Witherspoon (3).
