Local boy to appear in patriotic 'Ragtime'

A 5-year-old Muncie boy will join the cast of the patriotic musical "Ragtime" tonight at 7:30 in Emens Auditorium.

Jeremiah Bailey, the son of director of executive staff and administrative affairs Terry Whitt Bailey, will have a walk-on role at the end of show. Muncie is the third stop on the musical's national tour.

"We're really excited to have Jeremiah in the production," said Julie Strider, assistant manager of Emens Auditorium. "I think that will be really fun."

The winner of four 1998 Tony Awards, "Ragtime" is a story about three American families at the turn of the 20th century: one upper-middle class white, one socialist immigrant Jewish and one Harlem black. Their lives become intertwined with one another, as well as with such figures as Henry Ford, Harry Houdini, J.P. Morgan and Booker T. Washington.

The show is derived from a historical novel by E.L. Doctorow, published in 1975. "Ragtime" was also adapted into a 1981 movie, which garnered eight Academy Award nominations including best (adapted) screenplay and best original song, "One More Hour" by Randy Newman.

"I think this is a really great show especially now because it has such a patriotic feel to it," Strider said. "It gives people the chance to go out and do something fun on Valentine's Day.

Remaining tickets are $25 and $30, and Ball State students can obtain free tickets in advance. Tickets can be purchased at the Emens Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, or can be charged by phone at 644-3131 or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
