LETTER: Greek organizations are not for everyone

Dear editor:

I am not a fraternity man but I loved Alan Rucker's column Monday. Especially this: "You choose to be your own person, content in your tiny world of incorrect assumptions and a pathetic piece of existence you believe satisfies the requirements of a full college experience. You are a sad little person, and you have my pity."

I think all non-greeks owe him gratitude. I'm glad he feels sorry for me because I feel more secure now that I have him on my side. I had no idea I was living such a "pathetic piece of existence." He's opened my eyes, and now I realize how worthless and stupid I really am. I'm going to rush a fraternity next fall; he can count on that. Then, I'll finally be experiencing college life the way he thinks I should be.

I thought I was doing my best. I was involved in campus leadership activities and I went to lectures, workshops and forums. I even attended films sponsored by the University Film Series. Just this past weekend, I spent my Saturday participating in a community service project. I thought I was making friends on my own and I thought I was happy. I thought I had a good time wearing plain sweatshirts. But now I see I need clothing with shiny, emblazoned letters.

My point: The greek system is not for everyone. It's a lot of commitment; I won't deny that. But who the hell is he to suggest anyone who isn't greek needs his pity? Isn't it cool to be self-aggrandizing?

Rucker wrote, "You sure as hell don't want my brothers and me having our Hitler youth rallies on Riverside Avenue on Sunday nights." Spare us and live your life and those of us who aren't greek will do the same. Expect stereotypes to occur because they happen. There's nothing you or me or God can do about it. People are flawed and we pass judgment. Just because someone doesn't have the same sweatshirt as you or live his life the same way as you doesn't make him wrong or right. It doesn't make him anything except different. What is so wrong with that?
