EDITOTRIAL: Security measures needed long ago

Airport security finally in hands of federal government.

Security on our streets, in our neighborhoods and in our communities is handled by police officers employed by our states and cities. Our police are paid competitive salaries with solid benefit packages.

It is completely absurd that up until this past weekend, security in the air - where millions of Americans travel each year - was monitored by security provided by private companies.

Sunday marked the first step of a nine-month process of integrating a new federal administration that will handle all the security efforts at the nation's airports. Having the Feds step in to handle airport security should have happened years ago.

Airport security jobs were taken by those who could not find other employment. The jobs paid very little and were often part-time. These people did not care about their jobs. They had little training and in most cases, it was not the job they wanted anyway.

Why would they take their jobs seriously?

The Federal Aviation Administration is a government entity that oversees the nation's airplanes. Why wouldn't the federal government oversee the nation's airports?

The government hopes to have a work force of 30,000 employees who are U.S. citizens, fluent in English, who passed an FBI background check and completed 100 hours of training by November. By the end of the year, all checked bags will be screened by explosive detection equipment.

This should have been the procedure a long time ago.
