EDITORIAL: Police chief switch positive for university

University Police decision a step in right direction for department.

Ball State officials made a step in the right direction in order to bring a renewed sense of trust and stability to the University Police Department.

On Thursday, Vice President of Student Affairs Douglas McConkey announced that after 12 years as the director of Public Safety, Joseph Wehner was removed from his position and Gene Burton, a 21-year veteran of University Police, has been named acting director.

"We feel that this is a good time to bring in some new leadership," McConkey said. "We as a university have appreciated Joe's contributions; we have made some good advancements in public safety. We want to support him in anyway we can."

Wehner was the center of allegations of unethical practices made by former university police officer and criminal justice professor Eric Moore. In various letters sent to university officials by Moore, Wehner allegedly had UPD officer Michael Milbourn follow Moore's estranged wife to possibly catch her driving under the influence of alcohol.

This step should only be the first one campus officials make in an effort to improve the University Police Department. In a campus environment, students, staff and faculty should be able to rest assured they are under the jurisdiction of an efficient, ethically run police department.
