EDITORIAL: Know how to respond if sexual assault occurs

Rape or attempted sexual assault may happen to one out of four women.

Ball State recognizes Sexual Assault Awareness Week, Feb. 25 through March 1. Counseling and Psychological Services will sponsor events through out the week to provide information for students on prevention and what do when assaulted. Speakers who have their own stories to of encouragement to other victims will also be featured.

According to psychologist Ruth Payne from Counseling and Psychological Services, one out of four women may be a victim of rape or attempted sexual assault at some point in their lifetime. This is an alarmingly high statistic.

People have common sense and intuition that tells them when an unsafe situation arises. People know not to walk across campus alone at night, they know not to leave with someone they don't know after a night of drinking at a party - but that does not mean people don't do it all the time.

So, instead of drilling students with preventative measures - measures that aren't getting through anyway, students need to know what to do when sexually assaulted.

Victims should first contact the police or get immediate help. The victim should not shower and should go to the hospital to undergo rape kit examinations.

With 25 percent of the female population at risk, perhaps the coming week's events will not only open the eyes of students regarding sexual assaults but will inform students on the proper procedures one should take if victimized.
