Muncie natives to perform tonight

It all began as a small dream in Muncie for the band PictureYes. Another chapter will be added tonight as it performs in the final round of the Battle of the Bands at the Vogue Nightclub, 6259 N. College Ave., Indianapolis.

According to PictureYes drummer Justin Escue, the band will begin playing at Average Joe's Sports Pub, 814 Broad Ripple Ave., while they await the drawing of the order in which the six competing bands will play.

Tonight's competition will present a $1,000 prize and will be the last string of what started out as 46 bands, vocalist Aaron Corbett said. The battle has been a continuous string of Wednesday nights with the winners voted by the fans.

According to Corbett, PictureYes won two of the single competitions and will now play in the final round.

"It's an honor to have fans come out and vote for you," Corbett said. "You don't make it on your own."

While Corbett described tonight's competition as the last for all the "beans," Escue also expressed the honor of being able to play at the Vogue.

"We're pretty excited about it -- being in Indy for nine months and being able to play at the Vogue is a rarity," Escue said.

"It's the pinnacle place to play," Corbett added.

According to Corbett the Battle of the Bands is a new thing for PictureYes, of which four of its five members are former Ball State students.

"I was always kind of against it," he said.

The publicity and name recognition it has brought the band, however, is irreplaceable. Corbett said fans of other competing bands have also shown up and voted for PictureYes.

The band formed in 1998, and, according to its Web site www.pictureyes.com, began practicing by playing in an empty jewelry store in downtown Muncie.

Corbett and Escue, along with lead guitarist Andy Flickinger, rhythm guitarist Justin Sizemore and bassist Mike Parsons, will head to the studio in January to begin recording the band's first EP on an Indianapolis record label. Although the debut album is not sold in stores; Corbett said they sell them at shows and usually don't have any by the end of the night.

While Corbett said PictureYes is not trying to "change the world" with its lyrics, the band has created a large fan base with its broad portrayals in its lyrics.

"We all have this love -- we're gonna keep it up. As for the future we're just going to keep on grinding," he said.

The Battle of the Bands starts at 9 p.m. with PictureYes starting at 8 p.m. at Average Joe's Sports Pub.
