Cardinals tally 8th-highest point total ever

Amy Bodus takes first on vault and all-around title to lead team.

The Ball State gymnasts posted the eighth highest score in school history last weekend in Kalamazoo, Mich.

The Cardinals tallied 194.5 points, defeating Western Michigan (192.925) and Illinois-Chicago (190.90).

"I knew we had the skills to score that high," head coach Mary Roth said. "We only have to perform without mistakes."

The Cardinals won three individual events. Amy Bodus earned a first place on the vault, scoring a solid 9.800, and tied for second on the bars. She also took the all-around title with a combined score of 38.875.

"She is doing well, but she has potential to do better," Roth said. "Her best two events in the past [floor and beam] are her weaknesses this year."

Renee Planck placed first on the beam (9.775). She also tied with Bodus for second on the bars. Roth says Planck is one of the most consistent gymnasts she has ever coached. She says Planck's consistency is no surprise. She has always been steady.

"She has always been consistent," Roth said. "I think she has only fallen once on the bars in her career. And that is what it is all about, not falling."

Quiana Williams rounded out the list of Ball State's first-place finishers. She was awarded a career-high 9.825 in the floor exercise.

"Quiana really improved her routine just with practice and repetition," Roth said.

The Cardinals' victory of Western Michigan improved their record in the Mid-American Conference to 1-1. The team's overall record is now 2-1. Ball State will be in action again this weekend at the Cardinal Classic.
