To meet the NFL's mandatory 53-man roster limit, the Indianapolis Colts had to cut 22 players from its roster by 4 p.m. Aug. 30.

Former Ball State defensive end Jonathan Newsome was not one of them.

Newsome is projected as an outside linebacker in the Colts' 3-4 defense, and his ability to play special teams will only increase his value.

With pro-bowl linebacker Robert Mathis suspended for the first four games of the regular season, Newsome could potentially see an increase in playing time to start the year.
