IU doctoral student dies in Malaysia Airlines flight crash

Karlijn Keijzer

An Indiana University doctoral student was among those on the Malaysia Airlines flight that was shot down Thursday over eastern Ukraine.

The Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, crashed with 283 passengers and 15 crew members on board. There were no survivors.

IU learned today that Karlijn Keijzer, a doctoral student in the chemistry department, was a passenger on the flight.

The 25-year-old native of Amsterdam received her master's degree from IU and was a former member of the women's rowing team, according to IU's press release.

“Karlijn was an outstanding student and a talented athlete, and her passing is a loss to the campus and the university," IU President Michael A. McRobbie said in a statement. "Our hearts also go out to the families of all the victims of this senseless act.”

According to The Associated Press, U.S authorities and aviation experts said the Boeing 777 was likely brought down by a ground-to-air missile, but so far there is no proof of who fired it. Ukraine and the insurgents blame each other.

The plane fell from about 33,000 feet near the town of Torez in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, officials said.

President Barack Obama announced that one American was on the flight. Other passengers were from the Netherlands, Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia, the U.K., Germany, Belgium, the Philippines, Canada, New Zealand and Hong Kong, the AP reported. The majority were Dutch, 189 people.
