MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals fall to Big Ten competitors

This weekend showed Ball State University men's tennis coach Bill Richards that his team's performance can drastically change between matches. The Cardinals lost 7-0 against the No. 8 ranked University of Illinois Friday and fell 6-1 to Northwestern University Sunday.

Ball State, families feel effects of student deaths

In the nearly five-month span from Nov. 8, 2003 to March 24, 2004, one Ball State student was killed by a university police officer, one Ball State student was robbed and murdered by Muncie residents and Ball State began the "Police Yourself" campaign, a controversial advertising campaign among students that led to multiple protests.

BSU student competes in Las Vegas

Cindy and Bill Rash flew to Las Vegas on Saturday, two days after their daughter, Nicole Rash, arrived as Miss Indiana. In the city of sin, Cindy arrived planning to see her daughter for just a little bit, she said. Nicole's schedule is "swamped," she said, and when Nicole does have free time, she either eats a snack or takes a nap.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Rockets soar past Cards

Enduring three long road trips in 10 days seemed to finally take its toll on Ball State University's women's basketball team Saturday at the University of Toledo. Playing on weathered legs, the Cardinals used a 13-4 run to pull within two with 1:41 left in regulation.

Terrence Roberts, one of the first black students to study at a previously all-white school, will speak to Ball State University students about improving human relations. Tatum Rucker, graduate assistant for the Multicultural Center, said Roberts' lecture was part of a week of events honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals set winning pace during weekend

Down 5-2 in the first set of the No. 1 singles match against Allysa Detroy from the University of Dayton Saturday, Sophie Quist could have allowed six months of shoulder tendonitis pain to wear her down to a frustrating defeat. Instead, the sophomore came all the way back to win the first set in nine-point tiebreaker and cruised the rest of the way for a 7-6 (9), 6-3 victory against Detroy in the Ball State University women's tennis team's 6-1 season-opening victory against Dayton (0-2) Saturday.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: BSU beats EMU 64-60 as freshman scores 20

With more than six minutes to go in Ball State University's closely matched game with Eastern Michigan University Saturday, Cardinals' senior guard Peyton Stovall picked up his fourth foul and joined fellow captain Anthony Newell, also with four fouls, on the bench.

GREAT WHITE HYPE: Men's hoops can't place first in MAC

After a dreadful first half to the season, the Ball State University men's basketball team has righted the ship, leaving many people on campus wondering if this team can pull off a conference title. The Cardinals didn't pick up their first win until New Year's Eve, almost two months into the season, but they are tied for second place in the Mid-American Conference West division with a MAC record of 2-2.

TRACK AND FIELD: Cardinals place second at Bowling Green Invitational

A year after finishing in last place in the Bowling Green Invitational, the Ball State University track and field team placed second out of five teams Friday in the same meet. The Cardinals finished with 130 points, while the University of Cincinnati finished with 141, Bowling Green State University with 116, Eastern Michigan University with 79 and IPFW with 24.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Ball State strikes early to defeat Illinois State

After Saturday's swimming and diving meet against Illinois State University, Ball State University sophomore Lisa Maertin stayed to work on a new dive. As she stood on the edge of the 3-meter board, she bounced into the air but instead of completing the dive, she jumped backward.

AC building floods Monday

The long weekend for crew members from facilities planning and management was cut short after the basement of the Arts and Communication building flooded Monday evening. Maintenance Supervisor Mike Williams said the cold temperatures outside caused a radiator coil in a mechanical room to freeze and burst.

Former Ball State University Deputy Athletics Director Ken Brown made his first hire as the athletics director of Lambuth University Saturday. Lambuth hired Hugh Freeze, who served as the interim head coach at the University of Mississippi this season, to be its football coach.

As students walked into the Yuhas Room at the Rinker Center for International Programs, loud music played as about 20 students surrounded their instructor. As she danced to rhythmic beats, she shouted loudly over the music and instructed students to move their arms right and left while swaying their hips as they smiled.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Sluggish start doesn't prevent win

It took the Ball State University men's volleyball longer than they expected, but the team ended its two-match losing streak Saturday. The Cardinals rallied from a two games deficit to beat St. Francis University 26-30, 26-30, 30-21, 30-26, 15-13. "We came out sluggish and then we battled," middle attacker Matt McCarthy said.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals can't cage Lions

The end result was the same, but the way they got there made all the difference for the Ball State University men's volleyball team. Less than two weeks ago, the No. 3 Penn State University swept Ball State at the Outrigger Invitational in Hawaii. However, Friday the Nittany Lions defeated the Cardinals 30-23, 28-30, 30-27, 34-32.

BSU jumps into health challenge

The second-annual 10 in 10 challenge begins this week for Ball State University students and faculty who wish to lose some weight and get in shape. Patty Hollingsworth, director of the Health Enhancement Program, said the 10 in 10 challenge provides ways for people to learn how to reduce calories and increase activities at a basic level.

Clothing store managers optimistic after first week

The managers of a new clothing and cosmetic store in the Village said they are optimistic after a successful first week of business. Store manager Joyce King said she and co-manager Erin Stessen opened Konaléa last week. The store targets Ball State University students as well as the Muncie community, King said.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards rocket to Toledo

After enjoying a lone home game and its first victory in Worthen Arena this season, Ball State University's women's basketball team is making plans for another long road trip this weekend. After the Cardinals' 71-64 victory Tuesday against Eastern Michigan University, the team will attempt to win its fourth consecutive game to open the Mid-American Conference season when it travels to the University of Toledo on Saturday.
