BASEBALL: Statement season

To many, February is the month that plays host to the Super Bowl, the month the Daytona 500 happens or the month when basketball reigns supreme. For the Ball State University baseball team, the month February marks the start to its 2008 season. The Cardinals will leave the snow and cold weather of Indiana for their annual trip all across the south.

Billboard adds excitement

Drivers roll to a stop at Oakwood Avenue and McGalliard Road and stare at glowing ads on the new digital billboard while they wait for the light to change. Peak Outdoor Advertising owner Bill Glaser said his company installed the billboard on Dec. 21. Glaser could not comment on the installation cost.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Nothing new: Cards beat ranked team

Following Wednesday's win, coach Joel Walton said he wants his team to remain outside of the men's volleyball national rankings because of what that does for his team. Ball State University defeated No. 11 Loyola-Chicago University 31-33, 30-27, 30-19, 34-32 at Worthen Arena to pick up its third consecutive win against nationally ranked teams in less than three weeks.

Elevator traps 12 performers

Showtunes floated up the elevator shaft Wednesday as junior musical theatre major Ashton Naprier waited for a ride to the third floor. About ten minutes later, the Muncie police and fire department officials arrived and opened the elevator doors. Inside were 12 musical theatre majors in full costumes stuck between the basement and first floor of the Arts and Communication Building.

Copper wire theft causes phone issues

Copper wire thefts from phone towers and landlines has increased the past two years, Verizon Wireless representative Bill Kula said. Public safety is put at risk when copper wire is stolen, Kula said. Kula said the removal of copper wire from landlines and cell phone towers could knock out communications and make it impossible to dial 911 in an emergency.

GYMNASTICS: Ball State to play host to Eastern Michigan

Fresh off a trip to the University of Denver where a season-high score was recorded, the Ball State University gymnastics team returns to Irving Gymnasium ready to set a new high. The Cardinals scored 189.250 last week and hope to carry that momentum forward to their meet against Eastern Michigan University at 6 p.

Grant to help BSU open cyber studio

Film students will soon have an easier time checking out cameras, microphones and cranes, but there is a catch - only an avatar can use them. Blackboard Inc. announced Tuesday that Ball State University was the recipient of the $25,000 Blackboard Greenhouse Grant for Virtual Worlds, which will allow the university to merge class assignments, Blackboard's utilities and the virtual world Second Life.

Illuminated by candles, students and faculty members huddled together for warmth and support for those affected by the Northern Illinois University shooting. As candles were passed around a 30-person group Wednesday, the crowd began to quiet down as the organizers sorrowfully started to speak.

TRACK AND FIELD: Coach not happy with meet

Though the Ball State University track and field team will play host to the Ball State University Quadrangular at 4 p.m., coach Randy Heisler is not happy about it. Today's meet comes one week before the Feb. 29 Mid-American Conference indoor-championship meet and Heisler said he's opposed to the proximity of the two.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cardinals drop in standings at MAC meet

The Ball State University women's swimming and diving team fell to eighth place in the standings after two days at the Mid-American Conference championships. Freshman Katie Bylsma finished 16th in the 50-yard freestyle preliminaries with a time of 24.21 and finished 12th with a time of 24.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinal tries to make national team

Even though she has yet to suit up as a Cardinal, Ball State University women's volleyball player Alisha Green will try to represent her school on the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team. Beginning Friday, the 6-foot 2-inch Green, who transferred to Ball State this semester, will be one of 114 players from around the country trying to make the national team.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Goins getting the point

Listening to Ball State University men's basketball coach Billy Taylor, one gets the sense that training freshman guard Melvin Goins to become a productive point guard is something of a pet project. Goins began manning the point before junior forward Anthony Newell's return from injury and now runs the offense regularly when he is on the floor.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State fails to continue winning streak against CMU

The free throw issues that have plagued Ball State University this season struck again Wednesday night, costing the team a chance to extend its winning streak. Ball State shot 13 of 24 from the free-throw line and the Cardinals' late rally fell short, allowing Central Michigan University to escape with a 63-58 victory.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cards set school record in relay event

Two events into the Mid-American Conference championships, the Ball State University women's swimming and diving made school history. The Cardinals' team of freshman Maria Gramelspacher, sophomore Sarah Kehe and seniors Addison Del Rio and Michelle Huang broke the school record in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:35.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals look to continue recent success against Penguins

Coming off a 7-0 shutout at the hands of No. 26 Indiana University, the Ball State University women's tennis team plays host to Youngstown State University on Saturday at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. Head coach Kathy Bull said she hopes the Cardinals (3-3) will be back in full force after battling through injuries and illnesses.

After reviewing an erotic film produced on Ball State University campus more than a year ago, university officials decided not to press charges against the movie's director. Director Christopher Gregory said the controversy over the film was "much ado about nothing.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards get revenge with 27-point win

Attempting to leave its struggles in the Mid-American Conference East Division in the past, Ball State University's women's basketball team was looking for any kind of win Tuesday night. The fact that the victory ended up being a 76-49 dumping on the University of Toledo, the Cardinals' largest margin of victory this year against the one divisional opponent they hadn't beaten, made it that much sweeter.
