Record number of students attend stadium reopening

A record number of students flocked to Ball State University's football home-opener at the newly-renovated Scheumann Stadium Thursday. The student section set a Ball State record for attendance at a football game with 7,875 fans packed into the east bleachers, despite the Cardinals' loss.

James W. Parks loved Ball State University, and his passion showed throughout the decades he spent at his alma mater. Parks, a Ball State graduate and past president of the Board of Trustees for 15 years, died from Lewy Body Dementia on Aug. 23 in Venice, Fla.

Pre-game rally attracts alumni, prominent guest

The Ball State University Alumni Association held its pre-game rally at the Alumni Center before Thursday's football game, attracting prominent people, such as the NCAA President, but few students. Ed Shipley, executive director of alumni programs, said the rally, which was attended mostly by Ball State alumni, was an hour before the game at the Alumni Center because it was a short walk away from Scheumann Stadium.

University to utilize text alerts

Text messages might save Ball State University students' lives if there is an emergency. Kay Bales, vice president of student affairs, said the university will send a mass e-mail to inform students about the security changes Friday. The Crisis Management Team developed a system that will text message students and faculty during an emergency, Bales said.

Touch screens difficult for some students

Ball State University students returned this fall to electronic touch screens that have improved convenience, but presented problems for others. Amy Shaw, co-president of Disabled Students in Action, said wheelchair-users, the visually-impaired and people who cannot control motor skills in their hands would all probably have difficulty using the touch screens.

About 1 a.m. Tuesday, I found myself a bystander at the surreal blue-and-red flashing scene of a car crash on McKinley Avenue. Police officer Jason Lyons gave three freshman girls a ride to their residence hall in his squad car and apparently the testosterone in his blood boiled over.

Gimmick plays have provided excitement to Ball State's offense

One of the staples of the Ball State offense and special teams units during the past couple seasons is something coach Brady Hoke calls "gimmick plays." In 2005, the Cardinals attempted two fake field goals in the first six games of the season, including one against Western Michigan University in overtime.

FOOTBALL: Miami out to prove 2-10 record a fluke

Last year, the Miami University football team finished its season 2-10, giving the program its first losing season since 1994. However, RedHawks' coach Shane Montgomery said his team's final record is a bit deceptive. Miami lost half of its games by a touchdown or less, including a 38-31 overtime game at Purdue University and a 20-17 loss to Ball State University.

Police officer goes on 'joyride'

A Muncie police officer exceeded speeds of 60 mph on campus Tuesday while taking three freshmen on a "joyride" that ended when he crashed his squad car near the LaFollette Complex, Chief Joe Winkle said. Officer Jason Lyons, 38, said the Ball State University students encouraged him to run through red lights and speed before he slammed into a light pole around 1 a.
