There comes a point when every tragedy becomes a symbol, a historical event. Terrorists attacked the United States six short years ago, but the poignancy and heartbreak of the event already appears to be fading. Why though? What happened to the memorials, marches and moments of silence shared across the country during the first five anniversaries of the tragedy? Hundreds of thousands gathered Tuesday to mourn the deaths and celebrate this country, but the memorials weren't the day's focus for many other people.

Convicted killer of BSU student petitions sentence

A Delaware County judge is deciding whether to allow a convicted killer of a Ball State University student to appeal his sentence. Larry Newton filed a petition for belated notice of appeal to Judge Robert Barnet Jr. on Sept. 6, according to the County Clerk's Office.

Incorrect e-mail link causes voting hours to extend

The online voting for the Student Government Association smoking ban referendum has been extended to 9 p.m. tonight, SGA Treasurer Zac Davis said. A typing error in the link to the poll's Web site, which was e-mailed to students Monday morning, prevented the link from opening properly, Davis said.

The tournament to decide the Mid-American Conference championship is seven months away, but after Monday, coach Katherine Mowat likes her team's chances to win a title. The Ball State University women's golf team shot a school-record 294 and is in first place following the first round of the MAC Tournament Preview in Indianapolis.

Chemical spill closes Cooper Physical Science Building

Cooper Physical Science Building's basement will be closed until at least 6 p.m. tonight because of a chemical spill. Ball State University Police said after the spill is cleaned up, the building will need time to ventilate before it is safe. Graduate Assistant Michelle Tolle said she was cleaning a room where chemicals were stored when one of the other two people in the room spilled a four-liter bottle of ammonium hydroxide and paradichlorabenzyne, which is noxious.

Fraternity cookout begins recruitment

The Ball State University chapter of Alpha Phi Omega fraternity's cookout gave students the chance to meet current members and learn details about the organization. Nitina Kolliesuah, vice president of service, said the co-ed service fraternity provided free burgers, hotdogs, chips and sodas to about 50 students Saturday at University Green.

Waterdaze raises money for Riley's

Theta Chi fraternity raised more than $1,200 for Riley's Hospital for Children during its annual Waterdaze event Saturday in LaFollette Field. Theta Chi member Caleb Boucher said 32 teams competed in four games, which included a water bucket toss, a water balloon toss, a Slip N' Slide and a wet-head relay.

Ball State University accounting students had the opportunity to participate in a boot camp experience, but without the drill instructors and physical exertion. The department of accounting offered Boot Camp: Accounting Basics Training, which gave accounting students information about their future careers, on Saturday.
