Survey shows issues with summer school

A survey of 1,410 students reaped benefits for Ball State University's School of Extended Education summer school program. Joanna Wallace, associate dean of the School of Extended Education, said the school wanted students' opinions in order to improve the program, which has experienced a downward trend in registration.

Students vote for smoke-free campus

In response to Student Government Association's online poll of students, 4,413 students voted for a smoke-free campus. There were 2,486 votes in support of keeping smoking regulations the same.

Students clean up cave graffiti

Nine members of Ball State University's Natural Resources Club got into a tight squeeze on Saturday. Spelunking through Buckner Cave near Bloomington, Ind., altered the perspectives of some club members. "Until you're placed between a rock and a hard place, you don't have the respect for the underground world," Natural Resource Club President Lisa Nicklas said.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Cardinal teams face challenges

Cold, windy and rainy conditions put a damper on the Ball State University's women's golf team's chance to win the Mid-American Conference Preview Tournament in Indianapolis. After shooting a school-record 294 in Monday's first round to take a four stroke lead, Ball State shot a 307 Tuesday and finished second to Eastern Michigan University by one stroke in the 11-team tournament.

Bill to cut college costs for students

On Friday, Congress voted to approve the College Cost Reduction Act, making President Bush's signature the last barrier to the legislation. If approved, the act would provide an increase in money to students in need of federal financial aid, Robert Zellers, director of scholarships and financial aid, said.

Chemical spill closes Cooper Science Building

Ball State University's Cooper Science Building is open Wednesday after a chemical spill forced students and faculty to evacuate on Tuesday. Media Relations Manager Marc Ransford said it was minor spill. Nobody was injured and there was no damage, he said.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State sets record with 8th loss

INDIANAPOLIS - On Tuesday, the Ball State University women's volleyball team lost for the eighth consecutive match, a program record in its 35-year history. Following a moment of silence to remember the victims of 9/11, the Cardinals initially looked like they might snap the losing streak jumping out to a 7-5 lead in game one.

Half-Century Club visits BSU

The Ball State University Alumni Center was filled with laughter and stories of old as almost two dozen alumni gathered to see the university they once called home. The Alumni Center hosted the Half-Century Club on Wednesday. The day's events included a luncheon, a group picture, a tour of campus and a presentation from Larry Cox, director of the entrepreneurship center.

Stu West elevator traps 16

An elevator got stuck in the Studebaker West Complex shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to Liz Alberding, a Palmer/Davidson desk staff member. Students were trapped in the elevator for about 20 minutes before being rescued by firefighters, said freshmen Evan Hauser and Ryan LeVeque.

How do you like them apples?

Although they look barren and sparse now, by the end of the month Minnetrista Cultural Center's mini-orchard will be ripe with apples. A small orchard comprised of approximately 10 apple trees occupies an area near a gift shop on the center's grounds, said Visitor Services Assistant Lisa Nicklas.

SGA sponsors new political series

The Student Government Association will sponsor its first Political Speaker Series 7 p.m. Wednesday at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center. SGA Treasurer Zac Davis said the year-long series would bring Indiana politicians to campus to speak about how Ball State University students can get involved with local politics.

SOCCER: Cardinal players earn tournament honors

Two Ball State University women's soccer players were named to the Florida Atlantic University Kickoff Classic All-Tournament team Tuesday. Juniors Annie Aiello and Katelyn Alexander received the honor for their play in the weekend tournament, in which Ball State (2-2) finished 1-1.

Newsletters sent to off-campus students

The Ball State University Student Rights and Community Standards began sending newsletters to all off-campus students through e-mail Sept. 4, and will continue to do so during the semester. David Fried, director of Student Rights and Community Standards, said the newsletters will be published two more times during the Fall Semester and twice during the spring.

Professor honored Monday

A Ball State University professor received an award Monday thanks, in part, to student nominations. Hans Kellogg, assistant professor from the Department of Industry and Technology, has been chosen as the recipient of the Print and Graphic Scholarship Foundation's Educator of the Year award.

MEN'S GOLF: Maurer, Rhodes excel in Ball State's first tournament

The question of who would compete for the Ball State University men's golf team in the 2007-2008 season lingered as soon as head coach Mike Fleck lost five of his seniors in May. Part of that question was answered Tuesday as Fleck found two players he can rely on at the Piper Intercollegiate in Bowling Green, Ohio.

BASEBALL: Ball State alum loses second start

Former Ball State University baseball pitcher Bryan Bullington was statistically better in his second Major League Baseball start, but the outcome was the same. Bullington pitched five-plus innings for the Pittsburgh Pirates and gave up three runs on seven hits Tuesday.

Major health care facility to move near Muncie

Ball State University nursing majors could have more job and clinical opportunities with the development of a new major medical facility. Yorktown Town Council recently voted 4-0 to de-annex 27 acres of land on the southwest corner of State Road 332 and Nebo Road for development, council member Karen Pilkington said.

Volunteer sessions start next week

Four people showed up to the volunteer orientation day Tuesday, hosted by the Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross. Kay Renoe, director of voluntary services, news and community programs for the local chapter, said this week's informational session was open to the general public, but no Ball State University students attended.
