While Barack Obama addressed thousands in Irving Gym Saturday, 160 supporters of College Mentors for Kids paced around Worthen Arena during the organization's annual walkathon. Despite Obama's visit, Linsey Koetter, president for the Ball State University chapter of College Mentors for Kids, said twice as many people attended this year's walkathon than last year's, raising about $3,500 in donations for the organization.
Efforts to make Ball State University's campus more green are being focused on the Architecture Building as the Center for Energy Research, Education and Service looks to harness solar electricity. Robert Koester, director of the energy center, said the center is searching for funds to fit the building with new photo voltaic panels, which will produce solar electricity for the building.

Middle attacker J.D. Gasparovic was named the 2008 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Freshman of the Year on Wednesday. Gasparovic had a conference-high 1.46 blocks per game and lead the No. 10 Ball State University men's volleyball team with 121 blocks.

For the third time this season, Ball State University junior Tiffany Garofano earned the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday. Garofano had an ERA of 0.39 in her three games last week as she compiled a 2-1 record. She struck out 23 while limiting batters to nine hits in her 18 innings on the mound.
