Ah! The first week of classes is over with. It's been a long, tiring and heinous five days, but Friday is finally here. Cheer, smile or laugh. Do whatever it takes. And to the freshmen: Congratulations! Welcome to college! Fun, isn't it? As I enter my junior year at Ball State University, I am very excited to say that I am halfway done with school.

Pedestrian struck by bicyclist; minor injuries to both

A collision between a bicyclist and a pedestrian occurred on McKinley Avenue just east of the Art and Journalism Building Wednesday evening. The accident happened at approximately 5:35 p.m. on the median between the southeast entrance of the Art and Journalism Building and Bracken Library.

FIELD HOCKEY: Cards open season vs. familiar foe

Though Ball State University and the University of Richmond have never met on the field hockey field before, Saturday's season opener will be a reunion of sorts for Gina Lucido. When the two teams begin their seasons as a part of the Miami University Kick-Off Classic, Lucido, the Richmond coach, will be on the opposite sideline from her alma mater for the first time as a head coach.

FOOTBALL: Cardinals pay up for home opener

Whatever the scoreboard reads at the end of the Ball State University football team's game against Northeastern University, the small Boston school is guaranteed one thing: $175,000. Ball State will pay Northeastern $175,000 for playing in their season opener Thursday at Scheumann Stadium - the typical price to play a home game against a team from a small conference, Athletics Director Tom Collins said.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals adjust to new scoring system

Ball State University women's volleyball coach Dave Boos has already taken on the daunting task of getting 10 newcomers to adjust to his complex system of various offenses and defenses. To add fuel to the fire, the second-year coach now has to worry about a couple in-game rule changes from last season that will ultimately affect the way he coaches at the end of games.

BSU is not affected by MITS changes

Tuesday was the first time Hannah Byers, a freshman Ball State University student, used the Muncie Indiana Transit System. "I plan on riding it regularly," she said. "I don't have a car." Despite growing ridership, MITS will eliminate several routes starting next Tuesday.

MEN'S GOLF: Cards entire team returns

Last year, the Ball State University men's golf team had no seniors on its roster. This year, however, the Cardinals have five seniors, which gives coach Mike Fleck valuable leadership he lacked last season and makes Fleck's expectations higher. "Having five seniors this year affects things a lot," Fleck said.

Student hit at Scramble

A Ball State University student is in good condition after being struck by a car Tuesday afternoon at the scramble light intersection of Riverside and McKinley avenues. Irene Stroh, 24, a graduate student, was transported to Ball Memorial Hospital, according to Muncie police.

New deal in place for radio coverage

Radio coverage of the Ball State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics continues to expand as the department agreed to a new contract with Backyard Broadcasting. The department announced a new three-year agreement with the network to broadcast football games, men's basketball games and women's basketball games Ball State shows throughout the year.

FOOTBALL: Back in action

As MiQuale Lewis watched his team lose to Rutgers University during the International Bowl on a freezing January afternoon, he yearned to throw on his uniform and join his teammates in the huddle. The only thing preventing Lewis from buckling his helmet straps and running onto the field was an ACL tear he suffered in his right knee at the University of Nebraska in the fourth week of the season.

FIELD HOCKEY: Cardinals predicted to finish fifth in MAC

After failing to live up to expectations last season, the field hockey team will start 2008 without much of that extra baggage. Ball State University was picked to finish fifth of six teams in the Mid-American Conference by the league coaches in a poll released last week.

Admittance increases for 2008-09 year

As more than 3,800 freshman enter Ball State University this fall, 122 will find themselves living in study lounges to begin the year. For the first time in three years, the number of freshman admitted to the university has outnumbered the amount of rooms available for the students to live in, Director of Housing and Residence Life Alan Hargrave said.

Cars must go to fairgrounds

Students will have to move their cars from Scheumann Stadium to a new location this year as Ball State University's first football game draws closer. Instead of parking on campus like previous years, vehicles parked in the stadium parking lot are being forced to move to the Delaware County Fairgrounds to better accommodate people commuting to Ball State.

THE RIGHT WORD: SGA: slate's success relies on fine tuning

I am extremely interested in seeing the progress that CAMPUS Alliance produces this year. While I have a lot of faith in the leadership ability of Frank Hood and the rest of his slate, I have not been convinced that their platform can be entirely successful.
