Vince Gill croons with acoustic act

Just in time for Homecoming weekend, Vince Gill will be gracing Emens Auditorium this Saturday at 8 p.m. with an array of country music. Gill started his musical career during high school, where his bluegrass band, Mountain Smoke, cultivated a large following and eventually opened a concert for popular country band, Pure Prairie League.

Sparking interest in spirit

Swallows, Quick Salutes, Happy Springs, Colors of the World, Golden Waterfall, Peonies, Chrysanthemums, Coconuts, Willow. At about 6 p.m., Ron Evans and his crew begin setting them all up. Out of a long white van, he and his four employees started unloading about 29 boxes of fireworks - or "cakes," as they called them - and about 96 two-inch shells, a loot totaling $2,000.

Study shows professors need sleep

A study by two Ball State University faculty members show that students may not be the only sleep-deprived people in the classroom. Ball State health professors Denise Amschler and James McKenzie conducted the study of 109 Delaware County educators in an unnamed school district.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Ball State opens season with home meet

The Ball State University swimming and diving teams will get their first chance to compete today as the Cardinals play host to their annual Red & White Meet. The men's and women's teams will take to the waters of the Lewellen Aquatic Center at 7 p.m. for the university's first meet of the 2008-09 season.

Homecoming festivities will play second fiddle this weekend for coach Dave Boos and the Ball State University women's volleyball team. Coming off a satisfying 3-0 sweep of George Mason University in its last match Saturday, Boos is eager to play host to Central Michigan University tonight and Eastern Michigan University on Saturday in the Cardinals' Mid-American Conference opening matches at Worthen Arena.

Almost 10 years ago during the Ball State University football team's historic 21-game losing streak, David Letterman used his late-night show to give the team a pregame pep talk. He had a more positive reason to mention the Cardinals though on Tuesday's episode of The Late Show with David Letterman.

Ball State University freshman Chelsea Turner, 20, grasped her Polaroid camera as she scooted through Vera Mae's Bistro in downtown Muncie, waiting for singer and songwriter Carole King to show up. "I learned of her when I was 7 and I've been in love with her ever since," the early childhood education major said.

Ball State University's players still worried about Dante Love's health less than 24 hours after beating Indiana University on Saturday. They didn't allow their concern to detour them from focusing on the rest of the season. "We had a tremendous practice last night," coach Brady Hoke said at his press conference Monday.

For the second time in his career, Ball State University running back MiQuale Lewis was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. Lewis scored four touchdowns Saturday in Ball State's 42-20 victory at Indiana University, the team's first ever victory against a BCS school.

As Homecoming showed Monday, a bonfire can be a great way to get together with friends to relax. Students can also celebrate the first week of autumn with a campfire.
