Ivy Tech expands downtown Muncie while other businesses struggle

MUNCIE - Out with the old, and in with the new. That mentality has been the driving force behind years of downtown Muncie redevelopment, with many officials working beyond politics and self-interests to reach a common goal. Difficult financial times once hindered these efforts, but it may be the recession that helped spark downtown's biggest addition to date.

For the second straight weekend, Ball State University faced rain delays - but Mother Nature was not enough to slow the Cardinals down. All 10 of the participating Cardinals at the Northwestern Invitational won a match this weekend with five winning at least two.

FOOTBALL: Toledo drops bomb on best week ever

Big plays have gouged big holes in the Ball State University defense for two games in a row. One week after Auburn University had six plays of over 20 yards, the University of Toledo racked up seven plays longer than 25 yards. The Cardinals lost both games, including their 37-30 defeat to the Rockets on Saturday.

The dream scenario was coming together for Ball State University. A touchdown in the final minute, the gutsy call to go for a two-point conversion, the Statue of Liberty play putting the Cardinals ahead and all of it against the backdrop of Homecoming. The stage was perfectly set for Ball State's first victory of the season, the one that would break its six-game losing streak and give Stan Parrish his first win as its head coach.

A CBS newsman who prosecutors said was desperate and deep in debt was charged Friday with trying to blackmail David Letterman for $2 million in a plot that forced the late night comic to acknowledge having sex with some of the women who have worked for him.

Wildcat The Wildcat formation was back in Ball State University's playbook Saturday after its successful unveiling at Auburn University. Running back Eric Williams carried the ball nine times for 43 yards in Ball State's 37-30 loss to the University of Toledo.

CROSS COUNTRY: Ball State finishes 13th at Notre Dame Invite

Behind a third place finish from senior Ali Bishel, the Ball State University cross country team took 13th place overall in the women's gold division at the Notre Dame Invitational Friday. The Cardinals top runner in each race she has ran in this season, Bishel clocked in a time of 17:44 to earn third place in the meet.

Homecoming queen: Lauren Petersen says she appreciates the support from her family, floormates

Lauren Petersen said she knew this was her "Best Week Ever" when she was announced as Homecoming queen during Air Jam Thursday night. "When they announced the top four for the homecoming court, I was so excited for all the girls that made it," she said. "We made really good friends, so I was really happy for each of them, but when they called my name I was really excited.

BASEBALL: Reporter's offseason notebook

A summer position switch changed Jeremy Hazelbaker's career and made a world of difference last year for Ball State University. Hazelbaker had a breakout season after moving from second base to center field. The move propelled him to becoming the Boston Red Sox's fourth round draft choice in May and the Cardinals to a Mid-American Conference West Division championship.

FOOTBALL: Ball State trails Toledo 7-6 after first quarter on Homecoming

Homecoming got off to a slow start for Ball State University at Scheumann Stadium on Saturday. The University of Toledo scored on the opening drive of the game and took a 7-6 lead into the second quarter. Quarterback Aaron Opelt found wide receiver Eric Page for a 39-yard strike to complete the scoring drive, which lasted more than four minutes.

Looking over Ball State University's Mid-American Conference West Division rivals at the start of conference play, coach Stan Parrish sees plenty of talented teams. So much in fact, that he compared the MAC West to the American League East. There the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have left the World Series runner-up Tampa Bay Rays in the dust, 19 games out of first place.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cards have mixed results at Northwestern Invite

Ball State University has started the Northwestern Invitational with some highs and lows. Out of the 10 singles matches, Ball State has won four, including sophomore Cliff Morrison in flight A. Junior Shaun Bussert with freshmen Dalton Albertin and Austin Sansone won their first round matches as well.
