WASHINGTON - The House voted Thursday to make it a federal crime to assault people because of their sexual orientation, and Jenika Garetson couldn't be happier. As vice-president of Spectrum, she hears about incidents of hate crimes against members of the GLBT community.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State returns home to play Buffalo

There's a bull in the china shop known as Worthen Arena and its angry. The University at Buffalo (11-7, 3-2) enters the weekend 0-8 all-time against Ball State University in Muncie and look to change that. Standing in the way are the Cardinals (9-9, 2-3 Mid-American Conference) that are coming off a five-set win against the University of Toledo on Thursday night.

FOOTBALL: Temple takes 17-13 lead into fourth quarter

PHILADELPHIA - A couple of big plays went in favor of Ball State University for once, but Temple University was able to take a 17-13 lead into the fourth quarter. The Cardinals scored twice in just over two minutes to take a 13-10 lead with 8:47 left in the third quarter.

SOCCER: Central Michigan trounces Ball State

The Ball State University soccer team lost to Central Michigan University 3-0 on Friday in Mount Pleasant, Mich. With the game scoreless and less than five minutes remaining in the first half, Central Michigan's Amanda Waugh scored the game-winning goal. The Chippewas scored two more goals in the first 25 minutes of the second half to take a three goal lead.

PHILADELPHIA - Ball State University blocked a field goal for the first time in two years, but Temple University held its 10-0 lead headed into halftime. The Cardinals stood strong after a holding penalty gave the Owls a first-and-goal at the two yard line.

FOOTBALL: Temple leads Ball State 10-0 after first quarter

PHILADELPHIA - A fumble by running back MiQuale Lewis gave Temple University early momentum and a 10-0 lead after the first quarter in their game against Ball State University. After Lewis' fumble, the Owls drove 52 yards to the Cardinals' 10. Brandon Pierce ran the ball in for a touchdown, but it was called back on a holding penalty.

Organizers expect record turnout at Muncie Music Fest

For the third year in a row, Muncie Music Fest is expected to offer a variety of genres and entertainment for people of all ages. Muncie Music Fest starts at 6 p.m. Saturday on Walnut, Jackson and Charles streets. Sixty bands are performing on 12 stages, four of which are outside.

Since starting out as a local comedian in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Brian Regan has made 20 appearances on "The Late Show with David Letterman" since first appearing on the show in 1995. Reported burglaries drop while drug violations rise at Ball State

Ball State University is curbing trends in crime on and off campus, a recent study suggests. However, school survey administrator David Fried said there was one negative category that stood out in his mind in the 2009 annual security report and 2008 crime statistics, which were released Thursday.

The reasons for Ball State University's offensive resurgence can be debated, but its hard to argue that anyone has benefitted from it more than wide receiver Briggs Orsbon. Orsbon, last year's leading receiver, caught only three passes in the first two games of the season as the young offense floundered.

Indiana State Excise Police issued 19 citations during Homecoming tailgating: - One adult jailed for public intoxication and disorderly conduct - One juvenile jailed for minor possession of alcohol and public intoxication - 11 juveniles issued citations for minor consumption and possession of alcohol - Two adults issued citations for possession of marijuana less than 30 grams - One juvenile issued citation for minor possession of alcohol and possession of false identification The State Excise Police are the law enforcement division of the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission.

Japanese Consul General visits BSU; discusses Japan, U.S. relations

An emissary from Japan presented a seminar discussing the evolving relationship between Japan and the U.S. in Sursa Music Hall Thursday morning. George Hisaeda, Consul General of Japan at Chicago, gave a diverse crowd of faculty and students his presentation, "Japan in America: Building for the Future.
