GRAIN OF SALT: Health care bill has major flaw

It establishes a national exchange that lumps thousands of insurers together so consumers can compare prices and offers. It has an employer mandate to purchase insurance for companies that employ more than 25 workers. It offers generous subsidies to help business owners with the expense of purchasing insurance for employees. It bars insurance companies from dropping coverage to avoid paying out claims. While it's not as strong as it should be, it also contains a public option.

Kappa Delta happy about Twister Tournament turn out

Students danced and twisted at Kappa Delta sorority's "Twister Tournament" Friday night in Irving Gym II.This tournament was a philanthropy event raising money and awareness for cancer. All proceeds from the tournament went to the American Brain Tumor Association.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Michigan thumps Ball State in opener

The season opener for the Cardinals didn't go as planned. While Michigan's Krista Phillips was held to only six points on six shots, it was the supporting cast that stepped up and provided the lift to give the Wolverines a convincing 20 point victory, 87-67.

CROSS COUNTRY: Bishel the lone Cardinal at Regionals

 As the top finisher for Ball State University in her four races this year, redshirt junior Ali Bishel carried the cross country team on her back. Saturday, Bishel will again be asked to deliver as the lone representative for her team in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional hosted by Indiana University.

Sophomore Jarrod Jones leads Ball State with 19 points and five other Cardinals score more than 10 points. Ball State defeats Valparaiso 88-78 Friday night at Worthen Arena.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Finishing sets key to Cardinals in home victory

In the first set, the Cardinals faced an early hole when they found themselves down 17-12. But Ball State was eventually able to even the score at 22 and win the set 25-23, finishing the game on a 13-6 run. Sophomore middle blocker Kelsey Brandl recorded seven kills in the first set, setting the tone for the Cardinals (13-15, 6-9 Mid-American Conference).

Tweaksters arrives at Emens

 For Regan Patno and Julia Snyder, it all began with juggling. Ten years ago, the two performance artists met at a dance class. They both became interested in a classmate who had juggling skills. Patno and Snyder bonded because of their similar desire to learn this new trick.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Freshman starter Scaife shines in debut

Starting his first game as a Cardinal, Jauwan Scaife, a Muncie Central High School product, scored 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range in Ball State's 88-78 season-opening win over Valparaiso Friday night at Worthen Arena.

Council finalizes city budget

Muncie citizens left City Hall disgruntled after the fiscal budget was finalized at a City Council meeting Friday night.The purpose of the meeting was to decide if City Council would accept or override the line vetoes, or amendments, made by Muncie Mayor Sharon McShurley on Monday.Council President Allison Quirk said if the vetoes were not accepted, $9,000 would be added back into the budget.

SGA spirit award goes to freshman

The Student Government Association announced freshman Corey Vanbuskirk as the winner of its "Write in to Win" contest.Students who entered the contest wrote about why they have the most school spirit. Vanbuskirk's essay beat several other entries to win the prize of watching Ball State University's final home football game against Central Michigan University in the presidential suite with Ball State President Jo Ann Gora.

University Council debates Extended Education, council structure

Most of the discussion at Thursday night's University Council meeting was devoted to the feasibility of Extended Education and the structure of University Senate councils.When University Council Chairperson Laura Helms asked for committee reports, Extended Education dominated much of the debate.
