MEN'S BASKETBALL: Taylor announces signing of two recruits

Ball State University men's basketball coach Billy Taylor on Tuesday announced the signing of two recruits nearly one week after National Signing Day began.Taylor welcomed high school seniors Matt Kamieniecki and Marvin Jordon to the program and said both will be key replacements for the current team's two senior players — guard Brawley Chisholm and forward Terrence Watson."I like both young men that we signed to help in different areas," Taylor said. "They will add depth and good talent in a couple positions that we lose key players in."

Ball State sophomore middle blocker Kelsey Brandl was named the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. This marks the second time this season that Brandl has been recognized for excellence on the court.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards lose home opener in final seconds

In the chaos there was calm for a split-second, then an eruption. Danielle Gratton had single-handedly turned the tide. Gratton positioned herself under the basket and drew a charge with just over a minute to go with the game still very much in doubt.Trailing by one, 58-59 with the ball and 1:05 on the clock, Ball State (0-2) got a great look at the basket. Senior Audrey McDonald got the ball on the left wing and put up a shot. The ball went halfway down and then popped back out.

Former 2008 Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain's daughter, Meghan McCain, talked to students about fitting into the political spectrum and the evolution of politics.She spoke at 7 p.m. Monday in Pruis Hall. Building Better Communities, College Republicans, The Excellence in Leadership Program, Spectrum and The Office of Student Life sponsored her speech.

Sorority raises more than $5,000 at gala

Alpha Phi sorority raised more than $5,000 at its first "Red Dance Gala" philanthropy event.The Red Dress Gala took place Nov. 7 at the Student Center Ballroom. The money from this event was donated to the Alpha Phi Foundation, which supports cardiac care.

BOOZERS AND LOSERS: Assumptions never good

I think Amelia Earhart was ambiguous, though I wouldn't go so far as to call her a lesbian. My "conclusion," in quotations because I haven't researched the reality of my claim, is an effect of the Hilary Swank-produced film, Amelia, wherein Swank portrays the title role. Although this claim is founded on Hollywood cinema, the idea of questioning Earhart's sexuality in the larger context of a reconsideration of perspective is the real, central issue.

A group of elementary and middle school students had fun and learned a lot from decorating Frog Baby last week.Ball State University student teacher Megan Chance said the students learned through the experience, including about artists Christo and Jeanne Claude.

Whenever I walk down the street, I can't help but notice how many people on campus have tattoos somewhere on their body. It seems like either society is beginning to accept them more, or the people getting them are not as worried about them being seen as they have been in the past.

It was probably the most memorable art class in MiQuale Lewis' life.Lewis expected to end his career at Fort Wayne Snider High School with plenty of scholarship offers to play Division I football. He had the tools required to take the next step, and the vision, the speed and the natural ability to find a hole and accelerate through it.

FOOTBALL: Ball State to play home-and-home series with FCS-member Illinois State

Instead of paying a Football Championship Subdivision school hundreds of thousands of dollars to visit Muncie, Ball State University will play a home-and-home series with FCS-member Illinois State University beginning in 2013.Ball State will visit Illinois State on Aug. 29, 2013 to open the season and will host the return game Aug. 30, 2014. Athletics director Tom Collins said the series was good for Ball State.

University Singers set eyes on future

The Ball State University Singers are making changes this year, from new equipment to new concert dates, to inspire more interest from students and the community.The group recently bought a new wireless microphone sound system after the national switch from analog to digital signals, company manager Chelsea Schafer said. They used the new system for the first time last week at rehearsals.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards ready to open MAC tournament at home

It took five sets to settle it, but Ball State won the battle Saturday night in Akron, defeating the University of Akron 3-2. As fate would have it however, it's not over by a long shot. In defeating the Zips, the Cardinals earned the eight seed in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. Securing the eight seed sets up a showdown between the Cardinals and Zips at 7 p.m. tonight at Worthen Arena.

Today, Facebook has more than 300 million users, and Twitter has more than 44.5 million users worldwide. Due to this growth, malware and virus generators are targeting users of these Web sites more and more often.
