Mellencamp to kick habit if Facebook group hits 1 million

John Mellencamp's 14-year-old son has started a social networking campaign on Facebook that he hopes will get his rocker dad to quit smoking. Mellencamp's youngest son, Speck, says his dad has promised to quit if he gets 1 million people to join the Facebook group.

Imagine there is a new building to be constructed on campus, the new college of business, perhaps. Instead of the standard "Here, this is what we're building" from the higher-ups of Ball State University, what if designers from the area and beyond were asked to submit proposals and an exposition was held to show them all? It would be a chance for people to interact with the designs and speak with the designers, where the potential users can share what they feel needs to be done with those who can make it happen. This, of course, assumes that those who can make it happen will care what we have to say, but what if this were so? Would you go?

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals go from undefeated to .500 over break

The Ball State University men's basketball team entered Thanksgiving Break undefeated and in anticipation of both its first road game of the season and a home matchup against a team some considered to be a simple task.But after those two games, the Cardinals find themselves at 2-2 and looking for answers at the wrong time. Ball State begins its toughest stretch of the non-conference schedule on Wednesday with a home game against Butler University, which is ranked No. 12 in the nation.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: McDonald breaks Ball State record in win

There is a new 3-point queen on the Ball State University women's basketball team (3-3). Her name is Audrey McDonald. McDonald, a senior guard, entered Sunday's game against the University of North Dakota (1-5) needing four 3s to take the top spot in the record book with 254 made 3-point baskets. In the process of sinking those 3s, Ball State defeated North Dakota 89-77.

Hate crime rates rise nationally, remain the same at Ball State

Despite the advances of the civil rights movement, the number of reported hate crimes in the U.S. is increasing, according to an annual report by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.The study said that in 2008, there were 7,780 incidents of reported hate crimes. This number is up from 7,621 during the previous year.

Despite early estimates expecting a decrease in sales, Black Friday's steep-discounts resulted in a .5 percent increase over last year's sales as consumers bought everything from heavily marked-down underwear to the latest netbooks.

Angel Tree donations still needed

Student Voluntary Services is sponsoring this year's Angel Tree, where students can adopt an angel ornament that lists the toy, book or clothing item a child desires.As of Monday night, 32 angels still needed to be adopted.

Muncie Action Plan meetings start this week

Tonight will be the first of five opportunities for community members to voice their opinions as part of the Muncie Action Plan.Virginia Nilles, co-chair of the steering committee and director of the Muncie Public Library, said MAP's main purpose is to define what Muncie citizens can do to help themselves better the community, and she expects a large turnout for the meetings.

Stores plan for shoppers

Retailers are thinking beyond Cyber Monday — a holiday marketing promotion on the Monday after Thanksgiving — and trying to spin their discounts into Cyber Weekends or even Cyber Weeks.Target, Walmart, Toys "R" Us and others will be running online sales throughout the holiday weekend, with additional sales on Nov. 30, or Cyber Monday.Muncie Target assistant manager Carolyn Ireland said Target.com has sales all through the holiday season. Sales started picking up after Halloween, she said.

Writers Gala to showcase student work tonight

Writing will come to life from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. tonight in Bracken Library Room 104 at the third annual Undergraduate Writers Gala.Twenty students will present original works in fiction, nonfiction and poetry. After the student presentations, everyone who attends can participate in a round robin haiku contest. Prizes will be provided.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In the waning days of Ball State University's season, coach Stan Parrish talked a lot about the kind of legacy this year's seniors would leave.They will probably be best remembered for their contributions during the Cardinals' back-to-back bowl appearances, but defensive end Brandon Crawford will be memorialized for his leadership.

Learning Center recognized for tutoring services

The Ball State University Learning Center received two national certifications for the services it provides to students.A certification from the National Association of Developmental Education (NADE) was given to the Learning Center for its tutoring strategies and services to students. The other certification is from the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) for the Learning Center's tutor training program.
