First Thursday celebrates the season with art

The First Thursday art gallery celebration for December at the Art and Soul by Phoebe Gallery is set to get the downtown art scene into the holiday spirit, owner Phoebe Wantz said.The gallery will present its new art Christmas Show from 5 to 9 p.m. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus will arrive at the gallery at 7 p.m.

Senate discusses university projects in the works

At the University Senate meeting, instead of congratulating Ball State University for creating a glass center and being the first in Indiana with a glass curriculum, professors voiced concerns about the lack of parking spaces due to construction.The group talked about projects taking place at the university and within the Senate, including a glass curriculum for College of Fine Arts, SafeAssign implementation and amendments to the Senate Handbook.

Local restaurants cited for, correct health violations

Several Muncie restaurants received critical health code violations during recent inspections.Buffalo Wild Wings Grill and Bar, IHOP and Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken received a collective total of 17 critical and noncritical health violations in October.

Poll finds sexting common among young people

Sexting — sharing sexually explicit photos, videos and chat by cell phone or online — is fairly commonplace among young people, despite sometimes grim consequences for those who do it. More than a quarter of young people have been involved in sexting in some form, an Associated Press-MTV poll found.

Students use immersive learning experience to benefit Harvest Soup Kitchen

Ball State University's sport administration and hospitality event management classes have teamed up to raise at least $1,000 for Harvest Soup Kitchen.The Harvest Soup Kitchen is open six days each week. The kitchen serves an average of 125-150 people daily and more than 39,000 meals annually.

Ball State fights for rights to logo

After waging battles over budget cuts, earmark funding and the H1N1 flu virus, Ball State University is ending it's calender year fighting for the rights to its logo.The "Raider bird" at Portland High School, in Portland, Mich., looks too similar to Ball State's "Cardinal bird," Michael Van Wieren, general counsel for the Licensing Resource Group of Holland, Ball State's licensing agent, said.

Songwriting class to showcase work

Aspiring musicians looking to snag a spot in the top 40 participated in a class this semester to learn about the secrets of writing a hit song. Ball State recently introduced a new course that teaches the fundamentals of how to write song lyrics worthy of radio airtime.Students in the class will be showcasing songs they've written in the class at a concert starting at 8 p.m. tonight in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Tally. The show is free and will feature a variety of different musical styles.

Ball State SGA travels to Purdue University to collaborate, brainstorm ideas

Sixteen members of Ball State University's Student Government Association traveled to Purdue University on Wednesday night in an effort to collaborate with the school and get ideas about how to improve student life.Nicole Akey, SGA president pro-tempore, has been talking about the trip with the president of Purdue's student government since the beginning of the semester.

FOOTBALL: Three Cards named second team All-MAC

Running back MiQuale Lewis and defensive ends Robert Eddins and Brandon Crawford were named second team All-Mid-American Conference on Wednesday. It was the third straight year that Crawford was listed as All-MAC and the second for Lewis.

Hip hop film to show students how to be positive

Junior Joe Clemons said he wants students to be exposed to the positive messages and role models of hip-hop culture.  "There's another side of hip-hop that isn't really shown on television," he said. To show that positive side, Clemons, vice president of the Black Media Association, organized a screening of the documentary "The Hip Hop Project" for students at Ball State University.

Obama outlines 3-part military strategy

President Barack Obama announced the deployment of 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan on Tuesday night at West Point Military Academy in front of the cadets fated to fulfill his orders.The prime time nationally-televised address outlined a three-part strategy that, with international support, will enable U.S. forces to begin departure from Afghanistan by July 2011.

Health department administrator proposes tanning salon ordinance

Freshman Kayla Shoenfeld went tanning almost everyday for a year during high school and reported no problems except sensitive eyebrows.This type of excessive tanning among teenagers is what Bob Jones, Delaware County health department adminstrator, is trying to avoid.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State loses to Butler 59-38

Junior forward Malik Perry led all Cardinals with 11 points and six rebounds. Sophomore center Jarrod Jones also had nine points for Ball State (2-3), which has lost three games in a row after winning its opening two games.The Cardinals converted 13-of-41 (31.7 percent) shots from the field, including 4-of-21 (19 percent) in the first half.
