Committee to consider commencement, athletics cuts

Members of the Salary and Benefits Committee have the opportunity today to discuss more thoroughly the cost saving measures presented at the campus forum in February — cutting one or two commencement ceremonies, increasing graduate level tuition and reviewing revenue and expenditures for the athletic budget, among other ideas.

2nd date for Forum with Gov. Daniels set

The Department of Political Science and the Bowen Center for Public Affairs announced the forum rescheduled for Gov. Mitch Daniels will be held March 17 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center.

We're finally getting a more concrete idea of what budget cut possibilities might be recommended to the Board of Trustees come its March 19 meeting. Either way, these ideas are still in the beginning stages. No one may want to cut spending, but eventually something has to be decided.

One of the things I still have yet to fully understand about the Obama administration is why its opening fight, outside of the stimulus, had to be on health care. I would've thought, and still do, that it would be better to get a big issue through that had broad popular support.

I spend a lot of time watching the stock market. Whereas a lot of people watch ESPN, I watch CNBC. My home page is Google Finance. At any given time, I could spit out a short lecture on what's happening in the markets and what the effect on stocks will be. Am I always right? Hardly, but I do try to learn every day.

Muncie Civic Theatre to receive grants

The Muncie Historic Preservation and Rehabilitation Commission plans to start improvements on the Muncie Civic Theatre in early June. The process is expected to be completed as soon as possible, while there is good weather.
