Art, performances kick off Women's History Month

The second annual Women of Arts event titled "I'm Every Woman" kicked off Ball State University's celebration of Women's History Month with performances from singers, dancers and poets.

All the world's a stage

They experienced their first snow, their first roller skating trip and for most, their first visit to the United States. Six musical theater students from Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, South Africa, have been visiting Ball State University with professor Josef du Preez, head of the dance and theater department at Tshwane. The group has been visiting Muncie for six weeks after Harold Mortimer, associate professor of musical theater, began planning the trip with du Preez last year. This was the first time a group of students from Tshwane came to Ball State.

Spring Break in Muncie

Spring Break can be a magical time for Ball State University students. Midterms are over, classwork is put on hold and a week away from snow-covered Muncie is finally a possibility. However, there are always those students who have job obligations, no money or simply nowhere else to go. Indiana will be their only destination for Spring Break. From Saturday to March 15, they will have to make the best of what the area has to offer.

Ball State University students and faculty working on the new immersive learning project "Alzheimer's: Never Forget" are looking for family members of Alzheimer's patients who are interested in sharing their experiences with the disease.

"The Miracle Worker" and Helen Keller

On Feb. 19, the Muncie Civic Theatre debuted the classic play "The Miracle Worker." The story centers around teacher Annie Sullivan who is hired to help Helen Keller, a young blind, deaf and mute girl. The play takes place in 20th-century Alabama and focuses on Keller's early childhood, including her daily life with a passive mother, authoritative father and snarky half-brother. Sullivan works tirelessly to help Keller learn how to communicate with others despite her incredible limitations and erratic attitude.

The Hoosier Heartland Red Cross in Muncie is offering free disaster relief training courses on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to those interested in becoming a certified disaster relief volunteer for the American Red Cross.
