Despite their short time together, though, the Cardinals have chosen their Everest: their 15th Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) Tournament championship.
It’s an evolution, not a revolution, as the Cardinals turn to a “five-out” offense this season and do not label players by their positions. No more guards, forwards or centers. Instead, the Cardinals go by “crashers, backs and keys.”

Ball State Track and Field head coach Adrian Wheatley knew freshman Joan Easter was talented, but her first career victory in the Michigan Invitational Jan. 22 reaffirmed what he knew.
Sakbun took first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.88, while freshman Gracey Payne won the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.62. Agnew said he was ecstatic for Payne and believes her victory shows a glimpse of the future of the Cardinals.
Ball State Women’s Basketball is comprised of a mix of players who have been with Ball State for years like senior Thelma Dis Agustsdottir, players who have experience elsewhere and now make an impact for the Cardinals like graduate transfer Chyna Latimer, or freshmen such as Ally Becki and Marie Kiefer.
In the victory, Ball State totaled 13.5 blocks, 12.5 more than the Patriots. Senior outside attacker Nick Maritnski and senior middle blocker Felix Egharevba led the Cardinal wall, combining for 17 blocks.
Two months into his freshman season, Sparks said he knew he could achieve success at this level. He is averaging 11.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game and has recorded double-doubles in three consecutive games.
Ball State diving was able to defeat IUPUI in both the men’s and women’s 3-meter dive in a friendly at the IUPUI Natatorium. The Jaguars took both the men’s and women’s one-meter dive to tie with the Cardinals.
Junior Sydney Freeman missed a 3-point attempt with no time remaining in the fourth quarter after gradute student Chyna Latimer stole the ball with three seconds left.
Ball State Men's Basketball traveled to Toledo and lost 83-70 for its third consecutive loss against Mid-American Conference opponents. The young Cardinals have been tested early on in conference play, as they have gone against three top teams in the MAC.
Freshman center Payton Sparks recorded his third consecutive double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Sparks said he is more concerned about helping Ball State win than his individual performance.
The seven team per-conference model makes for bad competition, as we saw with the Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots combining for a -67 point differential.
