MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Freshman starts career against defending champions

For one freshman outside attacker, his first match Saturday night was against likely the most difficult opponent of the season. Ball State’s Brendan Surane made his collegiate debut under the bright lights of Worthen Arena, for a college that has won over 20 conference championships, facing two-time defending national champion UC Irvine — ranked first in the country.

Jahwan Edwards carries offense in GoDaddy Bowl loss

Jahwan Edwards lead game with 146 rushing yards. Edwards didn’t get a carry until the seventh offensive play of game. He looks to be main component in 2014 offense. With all the attention focused on quarterback Keith Wenning and his final game as a Ball State football player, it was a different player who stole the spotlight from the senior. The player was junior running back Jahwan Edwards. Edwards had 28 carries for a game high of 146 rushing yards and a score in Ball State’s 20-23 loss to Arkansas State in the GoDaddy Bowl on Sunday night. However, it took until the seventh offensive play for Ball State to give the ball to Edwards. Edwards said he was feeling “a little frustration” when he hadn’t received a chance to run the ball. “But you have to trust in the coaches in what they’re doing,” he said.

NFL: Luck rallies Indy to 45-44 playoff win over Chiefs

INDIANAPOLIS — Chuck Pagano couldn’t believe his eyes. Andrew Luck couldn’t believe his ears. Colts fans couldn’t believe the scoreboard, and the Kansas City Chiefs couldn’t believe their incredibly bad luck. It seemed unfathomable. On a day Luck appeared to be pressing and, at times, as bad as he ever has while putting Indianapolis in a 28-point deficit, the Colts quarterback somehow turned things around.

FOOTBALL: Ball State prepared for dangerous Arkansas State opponent in GoDaddy Bowl

Arkansas State runs a three-back system in addition to a rushing quarterback. The Red Wolves won five of its last seven regular season games. This is Arkansas State’s third consecutive appearance in the GoDaddy Bowl. Last week, Ball State (10-2) practiced outside, under the lights in preparation for the GoDaddy Bowl against Arkansas State (7-5). Head coach Pete Lembo prepared his team for Sunday’s game by pushing practices into the evening.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State opens season against defending national champion

Replacing two starting outside attackers will be hard enough for Ball State head coach Joel Walton and his men’s volleyball team when they open the season Saturday. He said true freshman Brenden Surane would start on the right side at outside attacker, hoping to help replace the graduated Greg Herceg and Jamion Hartley. There will be no time for Surane to adjust, not when the first match is against defending national champion UC Irvine. “We don’t have to be perfect,” Walton said.
