Ball State signs post player

The Ball State men’s basketball program wasted little time when the player signing period opened today.Junior college post presence, Bik Gill, has signed the fifth and final national letter of intent to play under head coach James Whitford.Gill is transferring from Owens Community College located in Perrysburg, Ohio, where he averaged 15.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per game last season.

Cardinals take home victory, improve to 11-9

Ball State’s men’s tennis team picked up another win at home today, beating IUPUI 6-1. The match began with Ball State winning two of the three doubles matches, taking the doubles point early to take a quick 1-0 lead.

BASEBALL: Ball State eyes MAC Championship

Through 11 conference games, the Ball State baseball team is off to its best start since 2010. At 9-2, Ball State trails Central Michigan by one victory for first place in the Mid-American conference’s West Division.MAC preseason polls, voted on by the league’s head coaches, tabbed Ball State to win the MAC West — a feat the team has not accomplished since 2006.

?NCAA approves proposal to expand meal allowance for athletes

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA’s Legislative Council approved a proposal Tuesday to expand the meal allowance for all athletes.The move occurred eight days after Connecticut guard Shabazz Napier complained during the Final Four that he sometimes went to bed “starving” because he couldn’t afford food.The proposal would allow Division I schools to provide unlimited meals and snacks to all athletes, including walk-ons.

Women's volleyball team travels to Dayton

The Ball State women’s volleyball team continues its spring slate of exhibition matches Tuesday when it takes on Dayton.The team has already taken on Purdue, and went to Indianapolis last weekend to participate in the Circle City Spring Tournament.The spring matches give younger and less experienced players a chance to show head coach Steve Shondell how much they’ve improved over the offseason.It also gives him a chance to incorporate new plays and different strategies into his offense and defense.Several starting positions are up for grabs after Ball State graduated five seniors who all played vital roles last season.Middle blockers Kelly Hopkins, Lauren Gross and Amanda Raker are looking to fill in an empty spot left by Mindy Marx, while Sabrina Magnapora will look to replace some of the lost offense that was provided by outside hitter Kylee Baker.The match begins at 6 p.m.

BASEBALL: Ball State defeats Toledo, takes weekend series

After splitting two earlier games, conference foes Ball State and Toledo squared off Sunday.The Cardinals scored two runs in the first inning thanks to solo home runs by Ryan Spaulding and Jarrett Rindfleisch.Brandon Estep’s two-run RBI single extended the Cardinals’ lead to 4-0 in the fourth, but the Rockets answered with two of its own in the bottom of the inning.

BASEBALL: Cardinals comeback falls short, lose to Butler

Riding a three-game win streak, the Ball State baseball team took a break from its conference schedule to travel to Butler, where Ball State fell 5-6.Chris Lovejoy took the mound for the first time this season as a starting pitcher, and pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits.

Collegiate guard shares sexuality

Derrick Gordon, guard for University of Massachusetts Amherst’s basketball team, hopes his decision to become the first openly gay player in Division I men’s college basketball will inspire others.“There are a lot of kids out there in my situation, probably far worse situations,” he said in a phone interview with The Associated Press.
