Applicants show interest in women's volleyball coaching position

Steve Shondell retired from his position as Ball State’s women’s volleyball head coach on March 28, and applicants have already began to show interest in the job. Ball State Athletic Director Mark Sandy said that while the university has not begun actively seeking applicants for the position, there have been people who have begun reaching out to the athletic department.

Despite cost, CIT gave Ball State chance to experience postseason

After a 19-13 regular season, Ball State accepted a bid to play in the CollegeInsider.com postseason tournament. Teams in the tournament pay $38,000 to host a game, and Ball State athletic director Mark Sandy said the CIT game the Cardinals hosted on March 20 cost the athletic department about $25,000 after ticket sales and other income.

Cardinals top Valparaiso 3-2

Ball State baseball (15-11, 2-1 MAC) fell behind against Valparaiso (8-14, 4-2 Horizon League), but came back to win 3-2 on the road. Ball State trailed 2-0 in the top of the sixth when junior second baseman Sean Kennedy hit a two-run home run off Valparaiso right-handed pitcher Ellis Foreman to tie the game. Junior right fielder Alex Call led off the top of the seventh with a single to centerfield and then stole second.

Shondell retires after 40-year coaching career in Muncie

As the Ball State Athletics Department begins their search for a new head women’s volleyball coach, former coach Steve Shondell looks forward to the much-needed time off he will now have. After nearly 40 years of coaching volleyball, the son of legendary Ball State men’s volleyball coach Don Shondell decided it was time to be finished.

Plesac, Maloney win MAC Pitcher, Player of the Week

Two Ball State juniors swept this week's Mid-American Conference West Division Player and Pitcher of the Week awards. Right-handed pitcher Zach Plesac earned the Pitcher of the Week award after throwing a two-hit complete game shutout Saturday against a Miami (Ohio) squad that averaged 6.7 runs per game entering the series. Plesac (2-1, 3.03 ERA) racked up 11 strikeouts without giving up a walk in the 9-0 win. Alex Maloney, the Cardinals' starting shortstop, earned the Player of the Week award after hitting .438 with five runs scored.

Nathalie Fontaine earns AP All-America Honorable Mention

Ball State women's basketball senior forward Nathalie time was selected as an All-America honorable mention by the Associated Press. Fontaine only one of 10 non-power five conference players and one of 42 players recognized. "We are very excited and appreciative of this recognition for Nathalie," head coach Brady Sallee said in a statement.

Weekend in athletics: March 25-27

Men's volleyball Ball State played its final two regular-season matches at John E. Worthen Arena this past weekend. Since the Cardinals cannot drop lower than fourth in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, however, they guaranteed at least one more home match in the MIVA quarterfinals.

Steve Shondell announces retirement from Ball State

Steve Shondell, head coach of the Ball State women's volleyball team for the last six season, has announced his retirement effective immediately. Shondell was the 2010 Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year and led the Cardinals to a 119-68 (64-32 Mid-American Conference) record during his time at the school. “The past six years coaching the Ball State women's volleyball team have been six of the best years of my life,” Shondell said.
