Picture the typical party scene: There's the somewhat - excuse my bluntness - skanky-looking and not-so-modestly dressed girls who seem to mistake the living room for a strip club on the south side of Chicago. Then you have the smokers outside who sometimes don't even make an appearance into the actual party, as they seem more content standing outside yelling at girls who walk by.

SOFTBALL: Cards look for consistent offense

After a two-week layoff, the Ball State University softball team (4-8) will resume its season with four games this weekend. The Cardinals travel to Iowa City, Iowa to compete in the Iowa Hawkeye Classic. The tournament consists of four other teams: South Dakota State University (12-11), Loyola University (4-14), North Dakota State University (6-18) and Iowa University (13-12).

FOOTBALL: Team opens spring practice on Saturday

When Ball State University's football team takes the field for the first time on Saturday several returning players, from a team that finished 4-7 last season, will be moving to the opposite side of the ball. Running backs Jovens Degage and Corey McGee will move into the secondary as cornerbacks.

Rainbow Cathedral cancels service

Nine months after its establishment, Rainbow Cathedral, the first gay-oriented church in Muncie, had cancelled its service for the first time last Sunday. After the recent resignation of the pastor, Rainbow Cathedral's congregation has dropped from 15 to 20 regular members to only four, including a member who has been substituting as pastor while the cathedral is looking for a new alternative lifestyle minister.

Bowling event to benefit organizations

The 14th annual Kappa Delta sorority philanthropic event, ShamRock 'N Bowl, will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Clancy's Village Bowl. The cost to bowl is $10 per person or $40 per team of four. The cost includes 3 games and shoes. The proceeds collected benefit Prevent Child Abuse America and the Very Special Arts of Muncie.

The Ball State University women's track and field team kicks off its outdoor season Saturday at the Southern Illinois Classic in Carbondale, Ill. For most squad members, this will be the first time they have competed since Feb. 24-25 at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships.

Professors have more to worry about than teaching classes these days. Even at traditional teaching schools like Ball State University, professors nationwide are facing pressure from administration to apply for research grants. A statewide budget crunch that's causing decreases in state funding to public universities is making grants a place to turn for additional money.

Student files lawsuit

A freshman at Ball State University, with the American Civil Liberties Union, filed a lawsuit Wednesday aiming to overturn a law that keeps students who are convicted of a drug violation from receiving federal financial aid. Alexis Schwab, a public relations major, is one of three individuals involved in the lawsuit, teaming with the ACLU and the Students for Sensible Drug Policy Foundation.

Festival brings authors to campus

Almost all of the 120 undersized seats in room 217 of the Museum of Art were occupied as the second annual In Print Festival got underway. Joy Castro, Victoria Chang and Ander Monson captivated the audience as each read from their newly published books. The stage at the front spanned the room's length, but the authors read behind a singular podium positioned clear to the left.
