Teams compete in chili challenge

Twelve teams are set to compete in this year's Cardinal Chili Challenge on the University Green. Judging begins at 10:45 a.m. with Ball State University President Jo Ann Gora and members of the university staff, who will determine the champions. The competition spans three categories - spiciest, most original and best overall.

Calendar ends Saturday finals

Students will no longer have Saturday finals as of Fall 2007, according to a revised academic calendar approved by University Senate on Wednesday. The plan also eliminates a day of Fall Break, and students will attended Friday classes on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

Eight years ago, Paul Buis put a small digital recorder in his right shirt pocket, hit play and began lecturing his class. When he finished, the Ball State University associate professor of computer science took the recording and uploaded it into his computer, compressing the file to conserve hard drive space.

Plagiarism is wrong. It is perhaps one of the greatest sins a student could commit in the sanctuary of the classroom. All college students should know that, yet several cases of plagiarism occur at Ball State University each year. But that's, at least in part, because the leaders of today are not giving us the proper role models.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Tough opponents fill weekend schedule

Things aren't going to get any easier for coach Kathy Bull and the Ball State University women's tennis team. After starting off conference play with two losses last weekend, two tough opponents travel to Muncie for matches. On Friday, Ball State (6-8, 0-2 Mid-American Conference) plays Bowling Green, which is 13-4 (2-0 MAC) on the year.

BASEBALL: Seniors begin to pick up slack after sluggish start

After a sluggish offensive start, a trio of seniors on the Ball State University baseball team has started to produce results. First baseman Brad Miller, center fielder Mike Sullivan and second baseman Kyle Dygert have been key contributors during Ball State's four-game winning streak.

This year's Cinderella story in the NCAA basketball tournament is George Mason University. So when the history-making 11th-seeded Patriots made it to the Final Four in Indianapolis and tickets were made available, members of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity at George Mason jumped on them.

TURN FIVE: Graduating seniors can't let senioritis ruin their last days

In exactly 36 days, more than 2,800 Ball State University seniors will turn the tassel on their college careers. I am one of them, and my senioritis has officially set in. In my experience, senioritis typically shows itself in a number of ways. Those seniors who never before were seen in public in sweatpants begin rolling into class looking as though they are still sleeping - at 2 in the afternoon.

Students win Regional Addy Awards for promotional DVD

A semester-worth of hard work paid off for two Ball State University students who won two awards at the Regional Addy Awards. Jon-Tyler Core, a junior telecommunications major, and Bobby Richards, a senior theater major, received the Gold Award and Student Overall Best-of-Show for their promotional DVD for Reflex, an improvisational/sketch comedy troupe at Ball State.

MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State drops out of national rankings

With the start of Mid-American Conference play this weekend, the Cardinals have a chance to prove they belong at the top of the conference standings. After losing three of their last five matches, the Ball State University men's tennis team dropped out of the rankings this week for the first time all season.

For example, they agree to restrictions on their substance use and gambling, as well as monitoring of their academics. What they don't sign off on is censorship of their personal Web spaces.

Administration to crack down on Facebook profiles

In the past few weeks, administrators in the Ball State University athletic department have asked student-athletes to clean up their Facebook profiles or to get rid of them entirely. While coaches feel it's the right thing to do, player reaction has been mixed. Earlier this month, coaches at Ball State University were contacted by athletic administrators and asked to deal with the issue.

BASEBALL: Clutch hitting gives Ball State fourth straight win

Defensive and pitching miscues by Purdue University and some timely hitting by the Ball State University offense delivered the fourth win in a row for the Cardinals in a 3-2 victory over the Boilermakers.-á Down 2-0 in the top of the seventh inning, the Cardinals (11-11) evened the score with two runs.

Classic musical comes to University Theater

Vaudevillian music and scantily clad men and women will fill the John R. Emens Auditorium tonight, with the opening performance of "Cabaret." The classic musical is set in 1930 in Berlin before Adolf Hitler's rise to power. It begins with writer Cliff Bradshaw (freshman Curtis Becht) remembering the time he spent in Berlin, specifically in the Kit Kat Club, a night club host to decadence of all kinds.
