THE LEFT SIDE OF THE COUCH: Politicians cannot be trusted, respected based on recent acts

In light of recent occurrences, I have come to this monumental conclusion and truth: 99 percent of politicians cannot be trusted. After Rep. Tom DeLay announced he will resign his position in June and following the news that a Department of Homeland Security official was arrested for child pornography, politicians deserve more scrutiny than ever before.

Ball State University's Asian American Student Association passed out free food Thursday at the Scheidler Clubhouse as part of Asian Awareness Week. "If we made people pay for food, no one would come," AASA secretary Derek Braun said. "It's a way to expose people to culture and food they might not be exposed to normally.

SOFTBALL: Four road games await

The Ball State University softball team (8-13, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) will attempt to bounce back after being no-hit just three days ago as it continues its conference schedule on the road this weekend. Starting with a double-header Friday against Northern Illinois University (10-14, 0-4), the team will then match up against Western Michigan University (15-10, 3-1) Saturday and Sunday.

The Ball State University women's track and field team returns to action this weekend at the Miami University (Ohio) Invitational. Traveling together this week after splitting the squad last week to compete at Stanford University and Purdue University, the Cardinals travel to Oxford, Ohio, to compete against the 16-team field.

Since the start of last weekend's series against Miami University (Ohio), the Ball State University baseball team has gone on the offensive. The Cardinals (15-12 overall, 5-1 Mid-American Conference) have scored 63 runs, produced 79 hits and driven in 58 runs in the past five games.

The Ball State University men's volleyball team hopes to end its Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association season on a good note this weekend as it travels to Ohio State University and Mercyhurst College. "I just feel like in that last Ohio State match, our guys might have been a bit relaxed partly because we played a relatively easy match Friday night," coach Joel Walton said.

A new fiber-optic network will allow Ball State University students and faculty to send large files and access materials more than 600 percent faster than before. Ball State will join Indiana University and Purdue University on a network called I-Light in the next few months.

A Ball State University professor will be one of 800 American college faculty members to teach and research in other countries during the next academic year. Nihal Perera, associate professor of urban planning and director of the Asian studies program, will spend 10 months in Hong Kong as a Fulbright Scholar.

Commission wants to bring BSU students downtown

Drawing Ball State University students and parents downtown during Summer 2006 Orientation and keeping students coming back during the academic year is a chief goal for the Mayor's Commission for Ball State Student Relations. Ken Hughes and Cheryl Crowder of Muncie Downtown Development suggested engaging parents during summer orientation by dropping them off at a strategic point on Walnut Street and allowing them to explore the downtown area through a scavenger hunt or special visits for one and a half hours.

The Ball State University football team announced its 2006 schedule, which begins with four of five games at home, a televised late-season game at the University of Toledo and a game with University of Michigan. The first four home games are in the evening.

The Ball State University women's golf team will begin play today at the Eastern Kentucky University Spring Invitational at the Arlington Golf Course in Richmond, Ky. The event will take place through Saturday and feature 18 holes on each day. Fourteen teams will compete in this year's EKU Spring Invitational, including last year's team champion Murray State University.
