SGA slates receive fines Monday

Both Student Government Association slates received fines on Monday for some of their campaigning efforts. SGA Elections Board fined Vote Bare $75 for placing huge banners on the McKinley Avenue Parking Structure. This violates the Elections Code sign-size limit and the rule against posting directly on a university building, Elections Board chairwoman Kiersta Barnes said.

The lines at the Barnes & Noble coffee shop might be longer than normal today because students have the opportunity to receive a free cup of java. By filling out a survey for the Clean & Clear campus tour, students can get a free product from Clean & Clear as well as a free cup of Barnes & Noble coffee.

Carter's hot dog stand and Greek's Pizzeria have a new competitor providing a taste from south of the border to the late night crowd in the Village. El Camino opened its doors for the first time last Thursday, owner Felipe Polito said. "It was always my dream to have my own business," Polito said.

State nominates Burris for Blue Ribbon award

Out of the thousands of Indiana schools, Ball State University's Burris Laboratory School is one of eight nominated for the No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools award, Burris principal Jay McGee said. The Blue Ribbon Schools Program focuses on nation's No Child Left Behind Act and the act's reforms for high standards and accountability, according to the U.

Dining accepts plastic

Ball State University students, faculty and staff now have the option of using credit or debit cards to purchase food from the Atrium, Noyer Retreat and Bookmark Caf+â-¬.-á Dining Director Jon Lewis said those locations got new cash registers because the old systems were more than 10 years old and the maintenance to keep them functioning was not worth the cost.

This just in: Edwin Yoder, principal of Woodlan High School in Woodburn, says discussion of homosexuality is inappropriate at the high school level, and has demanded full editorial control over the school's newspaper. The reason for his overreaction? An editorial, written by a high school sophomore, that of all things urged tolerance of homosexuals.

Ball State University initially struggled with Valparaiso University's unorthodox playing style, but the final score proved the Cardinals were up to the task. Valparaiso didn't make it easy, but the Cardinals defeated the Crusaders 6-1 in an unusual Monday morning match.

Mother, daughter share stage

Twelve women dressed in red and black gathered on couches of the same colors for some casual and intimate conversation to discuss female sexuality Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom. Although it was a bonding experience for all who performed in "The Vagina Monologues" the experience had special significance for 45-year-old Avise Skinner, a nontraditional nursing major and her 17-year-old daughter Georgia.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State splits conference matches

The Ball State University men's volleyball team defeated a ranked opponent for the first time this season, but then dropped its next match. The Cardinals (8-6, 3-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) upset No. 6 IPFW (9-3, 4-3 MIVA), 3-1 (30-27, 30-24, 19-30, 30-16) Friday.

SOFTBALL: Ball State finishes 1-4 at MTSU event

A plethora of errors hampered the Ball State University softball team as it lost four of its five games in the Middle Tennessee State University Breast Cancer Strikeout Classic. The lone victory of the weekend for the Cardinals (3-7) was a 8-6 win against Belmont University Friday.

He's back. No, not the ghost from the "Poltergeist," but David Krich, also known as Kasper. The 26-year-old, world-renowned choreographer, disc jockey and reality TV star showed Ball State University he could dance during a two-day hip hop workshop last weekend.

I normally don't write into the Daily News, but after reading the Your Turn "Why you Should Vote U.N.I.T.E.D" I couldn't help but grab a pen and rebuke this poorly written article.
