The pressure of classes, work and other day-to-day activities can add to peer pressure from friends to drink or smoke. These, among other, aspects of college culture can cause students to develop habits that could one day lead to cancer.

I had no intention of writing about politics ... ever. There is a special section of the brain - scientists have come to refer to it as the "auto pilot gland" - that is specifically designed to kick in during moments of extreme boredom. It is an instinctual survival mechanism that allows adult humans to appear lucid and attentive throughout the length of bland social exchanges.

BASEBALL: Player named second team All-American

Ball State University senior first baseman Brad Miller was named to the All-American Second Team squad last week by the American Baseball Coaches Association & Rawlings. Miller is the fifth second team All-American in Ball State history and the third to receive the honor from the ABCA.

Pipe organ will sound in Sursa Music Hall Fall 2006

The music of a new pipe organ will fill Sursa Music Hall starting Fall Semester. A $1 million donation made by Mary Jane Sursa and her late husband, David Sursa, will provide a pipe organ made by Goulding and Wood, in Indianapolis. The 50-stop pipe organ will be the final touch for the university's world-class venue, Robert Kvam, dean of the College of Fine Arts, said.

Tom Collins: The Real Deal

When he was hired as director of intercollegiate athletics in November, Tom Collins said he was ready to take Ball State University athletics to the next level. He stayed true to his world, already firing two coaches in his five months at Ball State. In an interview conducted last week, Collins talks about subjects ranging from the new coaches, priority seating for men's basketball and the football stadium renovation.

Men's basketball coach Ronny Thompson will have one more slot to fill on his staff before the beginning of next season. Michael Bennett, who was director of basketball operations, has decided to leave the program after one season on former coach Tim Buckley's staff.

The contract for Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins calls for a base salary of $160,000 and up to $20,000 annually for achieving athletic performance goals.

In his opening press conference, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins said there was no reason Ball State University could not compete in all sports in the Mid-American Conference. He also said he would find the necessary resources for all sports programs.

Senior dies in one-car accident

More than 600 family members and friends attended the funeral of a Ball State University senior Saturday. Funeral services for Tiffany Buckhave, 22, were held in St. Paul Church in New Alsace.

The cast members of "Smokey Joe's Caf+â-¬" are not just performing during dinner, they are also serving it. "Smokey Joe's Caf+â-¬" is a high-energy music review of songs written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller during the '50s and '60s. The dinner-theater performance includes a three-course meal catered by Johnny Carino's.

Every year, the complaint is the same: There's nothing to do in Muncie. This gripe seems to get even louder in the summer as the social scene dwindles with the majority of students gone for the break. Despite the best efforts of Muncie's event planners and officials, business people and politicians, a surprising explanation for boredom has arisen: Ball State University students just aren't looking anymore.

A top Ball State University administrator stepping up to fill another administrator's absence might be leaving a vacancy of his own. Frank Sabatine, interim associate provost and dean of the school of extended education, takes over for Interim Provost Deb Balogh today.

Falling down and getting back up

Every weekday morning, Kate Frazier drives a solitary and relaxing one hour and ten minutes from her home in Indianapolis, where she lives with her life partner and two children, to her Criminal Justice class at Ball State University. For Frazier, who survived the drug culture of the 1980s and will graduate in July, the drive is a time to reflect on her past, look forward to her future and appreciate the present.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Final assistant basketball coach slot filled

The final assistant coach slot has been filled by Ball State University men's basketball coach Ronny Thompson. Bill Howze has been hired to fill the position. Howze was previously the head men's basketball coach at Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.
