Corvette makes eighth appearance as pace car

Lance Armstrong, the seven-time winner of the Tour de France, is geared up to drive the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 pace car at this weekend's running of the Indianapolis 500. The Corvette Z06 is the 17th Chevy to be announced as the pace car and the eighth time a Corvette will start the race.

Indiana is the first state to offer lifetime handgun permits. My only hope for the future is that Indiana also becomes the first state to invalidate all lifetime handgun permits in the interest of public safety. Indiana, like most states, requires handgun owners to have a permit to transport or carry their weapons.

Students need to be aware of their surroundings and be sure to act accordingly. Locking your car and keeping your bicycle properly stored is a necessary part of being on or near a college campus - or any populated area in general.

Library begins work on new caf+â-¬

Construction on the Bookmark Caf+â-¬ will soon be underway. Liz Poore, assistant director of operations for Dining Service, said workers were preparing to remove the contents of the vending area in Bracken Library, beginning the week of July 24. Poore said the vending machines will be relocated to the basement of the library and new tile will be put in.

With the addition of a caf+â-¬, Bracken Library has the potential to become a hangout spot. While Dining Service and the library should be commended for bringing in a new service for students, officials need to keep in mind the problems that could arise. The Bookmark Caf+â-¬ could provide students with an opportunity to work in the library through mealtimes, but there is a potential for abuse -¡- using the caf+â-¬ to spend 36 hours on a caffeine-fueled studying binge isn't the point.

An administrator from a Michigan university will take over as Ball State University's vice president for University Advancement this week. Ben Hancock, formerly vice president for institutional development at Albion College, officially began his position Saturday.

Trustees name hall after Park family

After five generations of patronage to Ball State University, the Park family received significant recognition Thursday. At the retirement reception of Don Park, vice president for University Advancement, President of the Board of Trustees Thomas DeWeese announced that the East Residence Hall will be named Park Hall when it opens for Fall Semester 2007.
