WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Clock ticking for Roller contract negotiations

For the past six years, Tracy Roller has said she's been trying to build a tradition for Ball State University women's basketball program. However, unless Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins gives Roller a contract extension by March 31, Roller will no longer be the coach of the women's basketball team.

Students help sick, poor

College Spring Break is a time for students to relax and take a break from their busy schedule, but this year, eight Ball State University students headed down to Guatemala to provide medical care for those in need. Matt LaFlash, senior pre-medicine and Spanish major, said the Timmy Foundation, a non-profit organization out of Indianapolis, sponsored the trip, which lasted from March 10 to March 17 and included five professionals, including a pharmacist and lawyer.

Students working sleepless nights to finish up final papers and projects now have a chance to work in the comfort of their homes thanks to a developing Google feature. Ball State University Libraries has begun using the Google Books Search Project, a large-scale book digitalization project of scanning books and placing their contents online where anyone can access the information.

Thinking back to the 2006 Student Government Association election, we're reminded of the similarity between The Cardinal Movement and Team Lisec in terms of platform ideas. In the end, professionalism scored Team Lisec the Daily News Editorial Board's vote, though the casual nature of Cardinal Movement's members made us wonder what fresh blood could do for SGA.

BASEBALL: Pitcher wins weekly honor

Ball State University's Kyle Heyne led the baseball team to two victories last week at Wake Forest, earning the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week award. Heyne earned his first win of the season after pitching 1.1 innings in relief on March 13, including a scoreless ninth inning to lead Ball State to a 7-6 victory.

Student wins award for dress created for class

The 1940s was a decade dominated by World War II. As men were sent to fight in the war, women were given more opportunity to work. Prices were down, and confusion overpowered many. Common items were restricted: food, money and fabrics. This atmosphere was the inspiration for Ball State University senior Mary Morris.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Ball State kicks off conference season

Last season, Ball State University finished 3-5 in Mid-American Conference play. Despite consistently playing three freshmen, coach Kathy Bull feels her team can finish in the top half of conference play. The Cardinals will start their MAC season this weekend with two matches, hosting the University at Buffalo Friday and the University of Akron Saturday.

Director to leave Ball State, says offer too good to refuse

Patrick Barkey, director of economic policy studies at Ball State University, is looking for a change, and so he is leaving his life in Muncie and heading west for the mountains, hiking trails and rural economy of Missoula, Mont. Barkey said he finds his position as associate director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of Montana a challenge.

BASEBALL: Cards lose final tune-up game

The Ball State University baseball team had four errors, five hits and allowed eight runs in a loss to the University of Louisville, its final game before Mid-American Conference games begin. Ball State had won five of its last six games before the 8-2 loss Tuesday.

MEN'S GOLF: Team struggles in Spring season opener

Although coach Mike Fleck was hoping his players would break 300, the Ball State men's golf team shot a 301 in the final round of the Pinehurst Invitational held in Pinehurst, N.C. Despite their best score of the tournament, the Cardinals finished second to last, with a team combined score of 931.

Art to benefit Steffey fund

Ball State University students and faculty are invited to honor the memory of Purdue University freshman Wade Steffey by submitting original artwork to be sold at a silent art auction beginning Monday. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Wade Steffey Memorial Fund.

BSU controls, blocks spam with new filter

Students will see fewer spam messages in their e-mail inboxes because Ball State University began a new spam filtering service on Thursday, according to university officials. All e-mails sent to BSU addresses go through this filtering service, which automatically detects and blocks viruses and spam, said Loren Malm, assistant director of security, policy, systems and assessment.

COMIN' AT YA: Asking for a kiss can taint lovers' mood

This pertains to those people who went to Mike Domirtz's "Can I Kiss You" speech Tuesday in Cardinal Hall. Yes, it was an entertaining speech. He was funny, charming and classy. However, he was wrong. At one point in the speech Domritz asked, "What could be problematic about asking?" He was referring to asking for the kiss instead of just going for it.

CAMPUS: Teachers study technology

Ball State University took a leadership role in teacher education when it sponsored its first-ever technology workshop led by Apple Computer, Inc. on Sunday. The workshop, which ended on Tuesday, lasted three days and taught teacher education leaders from the Midwest how to bring 21st century technology into the classroom, Laurie Mullen, associate dean for teacher education, said.
