Disabled students find assistance at Ball State

Many college students with disabilities have a found a welcome home - and a quicker path to their intended degree - at Ball State University. A study conducted this year by the Office of Disabled Student Development shows it takes an average of 4.61 years for students with apparent disabilities to earn an undergraduate degree and an average of 4.

FOOTBALL: 'Love boat' keeps afloat

Offensive coordinator Stan Parrish calls Dante Love the "Love Boat." A more appropriate nickname might be "Playmaker." Love made a strong case for establishing himself as the go-to-guy Thursday, scoring two second-half touchdowns and playing a big role in Ball State University's 38-20 victory last Thursday.

Whodunit?

Rory Scherer said he was stuck in a work environment much like the movie "Office Space," having a case of the "Mondays" when the idea came to him for the interactive online movie "Mystery at Mansfield Manor." Following his intuition, Rory went back to college to get an MBA and learn how to put together a product.

Ball State University was able to access Facebook again after an equipment testing caused problems opening the site on campus. It returned with some new and disconcerting features. While the changes to Facebook make it seem like the ideal place for stalkers to glean information about people, it is ultimately up to each individual to limit how much a potential stalker could see.

Democrats register student voters

By offering donuts and juice to attract students, the Ball State University Democrats hope to encourage people to register to vote and to inform them on the voting process. Students voting in the midterm elections can sign up at the voter registration drive sponsored by the University Democrats on Wednesday and Thursday.

MITS to continue free student rides

Ball State University students with empty pockets do not need to worry about the suggested elimination of free student rides on Muncie Indiana Transit System buses, Assistant General Manager Mary Gaston said. When 2007 budget proposals suggested MITS will need $500,000 more than its current budget of $6.

On Saturday, the Ball State University football team beat Eastern Michigan University and this week features an important football game against the Indiana University Hoosiers. The Cards are playing for both in-state bragging rights as well as regional recognition and, as usual, the football team can expect massive support from their loyal students.

If there's one thing a Cardinal doesn't like it's a cat - namely a Jaguar. The Ball State University women's volleyball team plays host to IUPUI tonight in Worthen Arena. Ball State comes into the match with a record of 1-5 after an unsuccessful holiday weekend in Alabama.

Recruitment begins

Ball State University fraternities opened formal recruitment with a variety of activities where potential members could meet fraternity brothers. Some of the events included a Fraternity Expo, Carter's Hot Dogs, an inflatable obstacle course, cookouts, cornhole, volleyball and Buffalo Wild Wings.

Fraternity recruiting begins

Fraternity recruitment will be more formal in an effort to get non-greek members to meet greek members with a new initiative by the Ball State University Interfraternity Council. This is a change from last year when fraternities only had informal recruitment during one week in the fall.

Central Michigan University coach Brian Kelly will be answering questions about Thursday night's opener against Boston College for a long time. Two questionable play calls have drawn the ire of Central Michigan fans. The first occurred in the second quarter.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals struggle on road in Alabama, lose all three matches

The "Bama Bash" turned bust as the Ball State University women's volleyball team placed last in the 2-day tournament. The Alabama Crimson Tide hosted a tournament which included Mercer University, UM-Wisconsin, and Ball State. The Cardinals started the weekend with what looked to be a good matchup against UW-Milwaukee.

It has recently come to light that MITS is considering charging students for the now free bus service in order to offset the rising costs of transportation. Can you blame them? The problem all seems to rest in the fact that gas prices are rising and bus drivers are looking for better health care benefits.

Steve Irwin received a 12-foot scrub python for his sixth birthday. He was chasing and catching crocodiles when he was 9. By the time Irwin was in his 20s, he was working as a trapper who moved crocodiles, according to Associated Press. Irwin's honeymoon resulted in the creation of the popular television show "Crocodile Hunter.

More than a decade of campus construction expands university

Ball State University is halfway through a decade of construction that is changing the face of campus. In 2001, students saw the completion of projects such as the Art and Journalism Building, Shafer Tower and updates to Scheumann Stadium. By 2010, Park Residence Hall, the Communication and Media Building and the updates to Irving Gym are planned for completion.
