Students get free activities, food in Spring Fling

From a regurgitating performer to free Carter's hot dogs, the Ball State University Program Board is enticing students to participate in the fourth annual Spring Fling this week. All events are free for students with Ball State ID. Jason Davies, a member of UPB, said students can participate in activities such as kickball, a water balloon toss, tag, kite flying and relay races today on LaFollette Field from 4 p.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Ball State in 6th place

The predicted 20-30 mph winds had no effect on the Falcon Invitational, however, the 40-48 mph winds all day took their toll on the women's golf team. Windy conditions prevented any individual player from breaking 80, something that four Ball State University golfers were able to accomplish at last week's tournament in Indianapolis.

Ball State University has no plan on how it would handle a minimum wage increase if the federal bill proposing the increase passes, university officials said. Randy Sollars, director of university budgets, said forming a plan was difficult without knowing the specifics that would change.

The Ball State University men's volleyball team moved up to No. 13 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I-II national poll released Monday. Ball State was ranked No. 15 before defeating Lewis University Wednesday, No. 6 Ohio State University Friday and Rutgers-Newark University Saturday.

An audible "wow" was heard when the new design planned for Ball State University's Web site was unveiled to student and faculty focus groups, University Web coordinator Nancy Prater said. Students can expect a redesigned Web site when they return to school in the fall, Prater said.

Police trained in case of incident

If a shooting such as the one at Virginia Tech on Monday happens at Ball State University, the local police departments are trained to handle the situation. Gene Burton, director of public safety, said the Ball State, Muncie, Sheriff's and Indiana State police departments have received Active Shooter training designed to train police forces in dealing with an armed suspect in an open-fire situation.

Parking lot closes for Carnival

Due to the Late Nite, UPB and Student Center sponsored Carnival Friday, the commuter lot (C1) on the north end of campus next to the tennis courts will be temporarily closed beginning 10 p.m. Wednesday until Saturday. There is parking in any other green commuter lot and the stadium with free shuttle bus service available.

After dropping two of three games to Mid-American Conference foe Kent State University, Ball State University baseball coach Greg Beals said the Cardinals have not met the team's expectations. When Enron fell and founder Ken Lay died in July awaiting trial, the public outcried justice might not have been served. Brian Moriarty said that was not the case. Moriarty, the associate director for communications at the Business Roundtable Institute for Corporate Ethics, said scandals such as the Enron case helped build awareness at business schools across the country that the way ethics are taught should be re-examined.

OUR VIEW: Sober up

Ball State University student Andrea Tallant was legally intoxicated when the 19-year-old was killed in a fatal car accident in March, according to Delaware County Coroner Jim Clevenger. Sadly, it's not the first time this year an accident where alcohol was present resulted in the death of a Ball State student.
