BSU looks to hire career-fair mascot

If the Ball State University Career Center is going to inspire the hearts of complacent students starting Sunday they are going to need a superhero. James Mitchell, assistant director of the Career Center, said the center will hire a student for the feat of raising awareness for the upcoming job fair.

Man opens fire at Northern Illinois

Authorities say a man dressed in black opened fire from a stage of a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University, killing at least four people and himself. Anyone with a connection to Northern Illinois and would like to talk to The Ball State Daily News can call 765-285-8255.

Suffering from three losses in its past four games, Ball State University's women's basketball team will attempt to finish its stint against Mid-American Conference East Division teams on a strong note Saturday. Despite suffering an 11-point loss to Miami University on the day Tracy Roller's season-ending announcement was made, Ball State University guard Porchia Green said the news wasn't a distraction for her team. "We've maintained our focus pretty well; it's not a distraction really," Green said.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Rockets soar into Muncie

In the first meeting this season between Ball State and Toledo, the Rockets won 58-54. Ball State led much of the game, but with 5:17 remaining, Toledo took the lead for good. The Cardinals had the ball three times in the final minute of the game but failed to get off a shot on any of the possessions.

Ball State University men's basketball guard Peyton Stovall is in fourth place in the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. This award is given to the player who excels in the classroom, on the court and in the community. The winner is determined by an online fan vote and the votes from coaches and members of the media.

Hoke signs enhanced contract

After two months of negotiations, Ball State University football coach Brady Hoke will enter the 2008 season with his named signed to an enhanced contract. After talks with President Jo Ann Gora and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins, Hoke came to an agreement about the contract, which will raise his salary to $240,000 per year with additional incentives and a buyout clause.

Sorority to have date auction

Valentine's Day dates will sell to the highest bidder at the third-annual Zeta Phi Beta sorority date auction at 6:30. Zeta Phi Beta member Markita Cunningham said fraternity members, Black Student Association members and other students would be auctioned off.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals shoot their way out of losing steak

Senior guard Peyton Stovall got his groove back Wednesday night. After attempting a total of 10 shots in Ball State University's previous two games, Stovall shot 10 times and made seven on his way to a game-high 22 points. The Cardinals put up their highest point total of the season to beat the University at Buffalo 76-67.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Senior wins MAC Swimmer of the Week

Wins in the one-meter and three-meter dives Saturday earned a Ball State University senior the Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week. Stephanie Paul earned the award by winning both of the diving events at Ball State's swimming and diving meet against Miami University.

Because of DeHority Complex's closure, Panhellenic Council will soon be stepping back from focusing on recruitment, PHC President Amanda Hendrix said. The PHC will be able to focus on different issues while a recruitment implementations team will help devise strategies to help increase the low recruitment numbers, she said.

Students learn about being honest, finding sexual limits

Students who talk about sexually transmitted infections with their partners are three times less likely to contract infections, according to Christina Johnson and Elena Petrova, members of the Health Education and Psychology Outreach Team. At a Black Student Association-sponsored sex talk event, Johnson and Petrova talked to students about knowing their sexual limits and being open and honest with their partners.
