DAYWATCH: Panel discussion focuses on Obama as a civil rights achievement

About 30 students attended the inaugural panel discussion Tuesday at Pruis Hall, where students, faculty and four panelists talked about the day's events that ushered President Barack Obama into the Oval Office. The central theme to the evening was that Obama's inauguration as the first black president in United States history transcends politics.

Building usage sparks scheduling debate

Under-used campus buildings have caused Ball State University administrators to consider scheduling more Friday classes. Associate Provost Marilyn Buck said the administration was still investigating how often buildings were being used. She said many buildings were used for more than classrooms.

Peanut butter products recalled at Ball State

If you're hoping to grab a peanut butter snack for your dinner tonight, you're out of luck. Peanut butter-based snacks, such as crackers and some Little Debbies, are unavailable to students and other customers. Those products were recalled because traces of salmonella were spotted.

Ice, snow cause minor injuries

Muncie's winter weather injured at least eight Ball State University students during the first week of Spring Semester. Dr. Kent Bullis from the Amelia T. Health Center said students had bruises, sprains and one broken arm. No injuries were reported at the same time last year, Bullis said.

Danger zone

When freshman Alex Fuller visited a house party earlier this year, it had a line to get in. The house was packed full of sweaty, drunk college students and the bar was decorated with stripper poles. Fuller said she watched as a girl who was dancing on the pole lost her balance and swung out into the crowd, breaking her foot.

FOOTBALL: Three assistant coaches added to Parrish's staff

Four days after hiring his first assistant coach, Ball State University football coach Stan Parrish announced three additions to his staff today. Parrish, who was named the Cardinals head coach Dec. 18, 2008, after Brady Hoke left for San Diego State University, named Doug Graber, Deion Melvin and Pat Perles as his newest assistant coaches.

The scars on his body, raspy voice and aged facial features are constant reminders of tales that would make the average person cringe. Born Feb. 18, 1966, he's an educated man and a loyal patriot. Although he boasts a bachelor's degree in English literature from UCLA and a master's degree in criminology and law from UC-Berkeley, his identity is derived from stints as a member of the U.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards face MAC West leader WMU

Heading into the first game of the Mid-American Conference portion of the men's basketball schedule, Western Michigan University was sitting at a lowly 3-10 overall record. Three MAC victories later, however, the Broncos (6-10, 3-0 MAC) suddenly stand alone atop the MAC West Division standings and head into tonight's game against Ball State University at Worthen Arena looking more like the team that was voted preseason MAC West Division favorites.

Temperature causes water pipes to burst

Residents of Woodworth Complex were relocated to Park Hall's multipurpose room in freezing temperature after a pipe at the east entrance burst Friday. Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for marketing and communications, said water from the burst pipes caused the fire alarms to sound.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards remain at No. 13 in coaches poll

Losing its season opener to a top four ranked team did not hurt the Ball State University men's volleyball team in the coaches poll. Two days after then-No. 4 Stanford University swept Ball State, the Cardinals remained ranked No. 13 in the coaches poll released Monday afternoon.
