WOMEN'S GOLF: Cold weather affects training

With the opening tournament of the spring season in less than two weeks for the women's golf team, the players have been doing what every other team across the nations has been doing: practicing. But with the high amounts of snow Indiana has received during the first few weeks of school, practicing hasn't been an easy task for the Cardinals.

Local music scene makes a comeback

Like Martin, owner and booking manager of Doc's Music Hall, has a dream for Muncie's music scene: turn it into the Austin, Texas, of the Midwest. When Doc's Music Hall opened in 2006, Martin said there wasn't much of a music scene around Muncie. Since then it has been growing stronger, and Martin said he believes it has turned into a focus area for music.

The Ball State University women's basketball team started its game Wednesday with a strong energy and outshone the Kent State University Golden Flashes, but the player that shined the brightest was Audrey McDonald. Not only was she the featured player of the game but also the leading scorer for the Cardinals with 22 points.

Steven Albritton showed off his smooth moves to a sold-out crowd at Pruis Hall Wednesday for Alpha Phi's 10th annual Mr. Phi-Nominal competition. Members of Alpha Phi sorority wore red dresses to cheer on contestants. Greek-lettered T-shirts littered the rest of the crowd.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards pull down win vs. Flashes

Ball State University women's basketball coach Kelly Packard has stressed rebounding to her team a lot lately. In a 77-70 win against Kent State University in Worthen Arena Wednesday, her team responded. Ball State (16-8, 8-2 Mid-American Conference) outrebounded Kent State 45-25 and had 17 offensive rebounds, contributing to 20 second-chance points.

Spring Recruitment brought above average numbers of interested students to Ball State University greek life. "Our numbers were up," Cory Schneider, Interfraternity Council vice president of public relations, said.

In-state BSU applications up 5 percent

Application percentages for Ball State University's 2009 Fall Semester freshman class are both increasing and decreasing. Tom Taylor, vice president of enrollment, marketing, and communications, said the in-state applications were up 5 percent but the out-of-state applications were down 40 percent.

Economy affects grants

Financial aid will be harder to come by next school year due to increased competition and limited funds. Robert Zellers, director of scholarships and financial aid at Ball State University, said students who apply for Pell Grants or borrow from private institutions may receive less money because of the recession's effects on available financial aid.

Residence hall security, fitness rooms on agenda

Steps were taken Wednesday to increase ties between Student Government Association and Resident Hall Association as representatives from both organizations attended their counterpart's meetings to address two on-campus issues. Campus Alliance is attempting to realize its platform points that include computerizing each residence hall's night security system and increase fitness room hours - both of which fall under RHA's authority.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Things stay the same: Cards can't beat east

Trailing the entire game at the University of Akron on Wednesday night, the Ball State University men's basketball team was able to cut the Akron lead to two points at 52-50 with 3:52 remaining in the second half. Ultimately the Zips' balanced scoring attack that featured six players with seven points or more would spell doom for the Cardinals.

MEN'S TENNIS: Senior receives weekly conference award

For the third time in his career, Ball State University men's tennis player Jose Perdomo won the Mid-American Conference Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday. Perdomo won both of his singles matches this past weekend against IUPUI and the University of Detroit Mercy.

Nurses train with 3-D video game

Ball Memorial Hospital has hired a campus graphic design firm to create an informative video and interactive game-like system to familiarize nurses with the new layout of the South Tower. Dylnn Melo, who works with Information Systems at the hospital, said the architecture firm the hospital is working with chose the Institute of Digital Intermedia Art and Animation as the graphic artists for the project.

Project awaits approval

A geothermal energy project proposed by Ball State University is awaiting the state's approval in order to begin construction. The Ball State Board of Trustees approved the $66 million project Friday. The project is set to begin May 6 and will take up to five years to complete.

Alumni 'bring the hope'

Two Ball State University alumni are giving students the opportunity to raise money for themselves and their favorite charity with the recently launched Internet apparel company Bring The Hope. Jeremy Chastain and Mike Marker, 1991 graduates and the founders of the company, said they were having a contest for Ball State students to make a T-shirt concept that could be distributed.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards look to mend paint woes

The Ball State University men's basketball team travels to the University of Akron tonight looking to snap the Zips' six-game winning streak, including their last four against Mid-American Conference West Division opponents. Ball State coach Billy Taylor said after being outscored 72-24 in the paint in the last two games against Miami University and Kent State University the emphasis against Akron will begin down low.
